Hello, im new to the forums, but i have a 1959 Ford F350 truck currently. the motor and tranny are blown in it. i was wondering what it would take to convert the 292 Yblock into a 1970 460 carburated and a c-4 that was paired with the 292 to a c6.
I would like to know everything that has to be done to accomplish this. Thank you.
As I do not believe the 460 is in the Y-block family of engines, you'd need to acquire, fab, or make & relocate the engine & trans mounts, change-out or fab shift & throttle linkage, have a new propeller shaft made. Maybe some electrical work, different radiator hoses, etc.
Unless someone mounted an adaptor kit for the C-6, the original '59 auto trans mated to the 292 would be a Cruise-o-Matic.
And wouldn't it have been the more than likely that is was the mating of an FMX trans to the 460 in '70, instead of the C-4?
Welcome, nice to have you on board.
I don`t have info for you other than the 460 is a totally different engine from the 292 so like the previous post states everything will have to be changed. It`s not that hard with the proper information.

Hopefully more will jump in with further info soon.
Not exactly my truck, so i dont know what was mated up with the 292. im more of a 60 era cars... but the motor is a from a 70 mark3 with the c6 transmission. i would expect that that motor and tranny would be more fit for towing (main purpose of this project truck) then the 292 and c4 (or cruise o matic which ever it may be)
Well that's why we're all here, to ask questions & Learn from each other.
As I stated previously the Cruise-O-Matic would be what was/is Originally mated to a 292 Y-block in '59.
Most aftermarket suppliers offer an engine crossmember and a transmission crossmember for the 429/460 and the C6. They are made from tube. I can provide you a photo if you needed it.
The 460 is a very good choice for these old trucks. They offer more than enough horsepower and torque to do almost anything. They will actually return decent mileage with a 2.50 or 2,75 rear gear ratio. That big block will be barely off idle at highway speeds.
If you lived near me I'd have the perfect engine for you! ...I have a 460 I just pulled out of my boat..... I wouldn't think of sending it to you though....it'd cost more to ship it than it's worth!!
A C-6 would be a great addition to a 460. You could also use an E4OD (if you like electronics) or a ZF 5 speed/OD trans too.
Cheers,
Rick

My engine is also a 1970 lincoln, In its stock config. it is rated at 365 h.p. Mine is now puting out a very streetable 440+ h.p. with over 500 ft lbs of torque.
After you work out motor and xmission mounts I would think you will have to have a drive shaft made up. also you will probably need to think about a heavy duty radiator.
A few more items come to mind such as a different exhaust system, fuel linkages/lines, some other other odds and ends but a very sweet ride and well worth it.
I was thinking of a 460 for my 56 M100 but since the front clip is already set up for a 302 I`m staying with a 302/351.
I believe Mid Fifty F-100s http://www.midfifty.com/ has the crossmember you'll need. I would STRONGLY recommend you box the frame, at least in the area of the engine compartment. I remember talking to a guy about a '56 he had for sale (back when I was in my early 20s and a certain former B-movie actor was President) which had a 460 under the hood, and I think a four speed tranny.
He wasn't asking much for it (about $400, if I remember correctly), so I asked what was wrong with it. When he told me the frame was broken I immediately lost interest. I've heard it's a good idea to box the frame even with FE engines (the 332-352-360-390-427-428 engines). With an engine like the 460, I think you'd be crazy not to.
