When looking for a Bronco equipped with the 4.9L I-6 look for a 'Y' in the 8th digit of the vehicle's VIN.Get a '87-'92 EFI version of the 4.9L,because the pre-'87 carbed 4.9L was a bit down on power. We had a '89 Bronco Custom with a EFI4.9L/C-6 which had adequate power. Both the Bronco Custom & XLT series featured a standard 4.9L I-6 ,until 1993 when all Broncos became stictly V-8 powered. The six cylinder was dropped after '92 in the Bronco line-up mainly because of the popularity of the 302 & 351 V-8s.The I-6 Broncos are more rare than V-8 models, but you should be able to locate a few for sale. Hope this helps.Good luck with your search.
>Why the heck would you waste your money on a V6?? Get
>v8!!!!!!:-X23
he meads the 4.9L INLINE 6, there are alot of people out there that can get high HP and torque from this motor with not too much money, I think there's even a ford club "6=8" that are crazy for that motor. Plus I belive it's lighter than the v8.
I had an 87 f-150 that had a strait 6 in it you could kill it I tride hoped to blow it then put a 351 in it never did had it from 92 - 2000.
If you can find one look hard dont give up then buy it!!!
i currently have an '82 f-150 with a carb inline six. i'll admit, itz short on power in the top end, but has an awesome low end and coupled with an NP435 tranny it is nearly unstoppable in climbing and pulling. it's a 2wd and with a good set of chains and tires that low-geared tranny will take it farther than a lot of 4wd's. Got stuck once in the middle of winter so far out that only a 6" lifted 3/4 ton with a 390 could touch me. (would have kept going, but the tires weren't the greatest and i threw the chains.)
My friend has an '89 F-150 with an EFI 4.9 and that is an awesome motor. he's turning a set of BFG 33's and he can go damn near anywhere. i've only seen him get stuck once when his front tires went through the ice into a deep trench.
All in all, there's a lot to be said about those inlines.
Mightbgiant, I have a 95EB Bronco, 351 and absolutely love it. I wanted to find a 96 due to the MAF (Mass Aif Flow) I have heard they have a little bit more power and run better. I had a 92 and had the trans (E4OD) rebuilt twice. I checked a few posts on FTE and was told that Ford reworked the trans in the 94-96 year models. IMO I would try to find you one in the 95-96 year range. Especially the 96 since it was the last year they built them...
