2007 Sport Trac owners
It averaged 22 MPG and it was very smooth. Actually considering that it had a separate "box" out back, it was incredibly tight.
I liked it, if I didn't require an occasional 7 passenger configuration, I would give it a definate "thumbs up"!
I think that it's a good vehicle.
I chose the Sport Trac because I wanted a true off road vehicle (needs to have a 2 speed transfer case) with a pick up bed that that would also have decent on pavement performance. I test drove a Jeep Rubicon Unlimited, and while it is a better choice for a hard core off roader, it doesn't have enough power to pass a slow RV on the two lane mountain highways on which I frequently find myself and I just couldn't see throwing something like a bloody deer carcass with fleas and ticks into the pretty carpeted back end of that vehicle.
I also believe the pickup bed plus optional lockable cover is better security for guns or other expensive equipment you want out of sight.
It can tow 7,000 pounds, pretty good for this size of vehicle, with a class three hitch, so I can trailer my modded Jeep if I want any more off road capability than the Sport Trac offers.
I guess the natural comparison would be to the various crew cab small trucks, but to my knowlege, none of them offer a V8 or have independent rear suspension.
I suspect Ford has packed a lot of quality engineering into this vehicle that may escape most customers' or salepersons' attention. For example, did you know that it has an aluminum hood and front fenders? Not the sort of thing you would expect in this sort of vehicle. Nor the sort of thing you would expect if Ford was looking to find ways to save money.
