Question Sport Trac engine & towing ?

I’m considering a Sport Trac (around a 2003 model) to replace our 190K mile Aerostar. The Sport Trac seems to provide everything I need: 4WD, bed for hauling (I understand the small size), 4 doors with room for 4 adults, garageable, fuel economy, etc.

questions:

Is the 4.0 V6 the same basic engine I have in my 95 Aerostar?

I’ve read different HP values for Sport Tracs … were there differences in HP ratings between years?

My concern is with the towing ability. I need to pull a small, single horse trailer. What are your experiences with towing?

I’m hoping to get 20mpg on the highway when not towing – is this reasonable to expect?

TIA,

Gary

ttt

I know I misspelled "Sport Trac" on the thread title, but come on ... somebody must have feedback on the engine and towing

Dont expect to get any more than 18 mpg.

I use my 01 sport trac (40k Miles) to haul a 4x8 trailer (heavy as hell) and a cruiser style motorcycle and it like there is nothing there. More than enough power.

The Sport Trac has the 4.0L SOHC (207 HP, 238 ft lb torque) as opposed to the 160/225 in the 4.0L OHV engine in your Aerostar.

Not towing and with conservative driving you might get almost 20 if your keep your speed down and reasonable. Doing 75 or so it won't be too high. My 4.0L OHV will get 21-22 on the highway at 75, but it's highway geared.

It's got plenty of power for towing, but you'll need to rev it to feel it.

although there are several models that use the 4.0 the sport trac gets about the worst mileage of all of them. After see what mine gets and comparing it to other personal reviews online, you should expect 17-19 mpg max.

The SOHC is a great motor. We had one in a 97 Explorer and put on quite a few miles with our popup trailer behind us in the summers with no problems.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It seems as if towing won't be a problem. It's too bad the mileage isn't a little better (I get 19mpg in my Aerostar).
