I am considering matching a 40 bed with a 46 cab. In Fix's post I read that the 40 bed is a few inches narrower than the 46 which I am OK with. I have never seen the fenders for either truck, so I was wondering how different they are. Would it be possible to put 46 fenders on this 40 bed? What kind of modifications would this involve? I'm concerned about that and having difficulties matching up the running boards, especially if I have to use 40 fenders.
magicbus, from what I have seen the rear fenders from the 40-41 are very similar to the ones for the 42-47. The 40-41 fenders have a hole in the left fender for the gas fill. The 42-47 do not. You will have to be careful of the narrower bed because you might run into the tires rubbing on the fenders unless you compensate. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can chime in. The running boards probably won't work without modifying them quite a bit because they won't line up with the fenders. You would save yourself a lot of work by trying to find yourself a 42-47 bed somehow.

Thanks for the info. Right now I am thinking using 40 fenders is probably out of the question because the running boards would be a huge problem. If 46 fenders are not too hard to put on the 40 bed, then this could still work. I need to make some measurements of my truck to see if the wheels would be scraping on that narrow beds fenders.
If you'd like...you're welcome to come over and do some test fitting....my '42 has the bed on it, without the fenders...and some stock width wheels/tires holding it up.
I also have a '48 bed out back (same width as the '42) that you could see how the fenders would sit on..just another option for a bed.

I'm in Oakdale, about 1.5 hours from you.
3Mike6, I see that you are also on this forum since you have a 46. We bump into each other on the 48-60 forum. I posted a question on this forum looking for window channel measurements on a 42-47. I haven't had a reply. I am trying to see if I can fit a power window setup made for a 42-46 in my 49 with reasonable modifications. Is it possible that you can help with a few measurements? Perhaps a pm would be better.
Thanks
I apologize to everyone for high jacking the thead.
I saw your post, but I don't have the windows out of mine...but would be happy to take measurements the best I could for you....that said, I was a bit confused on your request for measurements..maybe you could draw a pic and email it to me?
3Mike6, I might actually take you up on that... I have friends in turlock. I've got to put this bed on a '90 ranger frame, so if I could take some measurements that would be great. Might try to stop by in the next few weeks/months. Currently very busy repairing the cab, but always looking and thinking ahead.

I think you might come up a little narrow on that 90 Ranger frame. My 46 is on an 88 Ranger frame.
The 46/50 bed fits pretty well, so I would assume that the 40 would leave the wheels rubbing the fenders. However when I measure the width from outside the rear wheels they come out the same. (tire size would probably make all the difference here)
Getting the bed to bolt down is a simple as drilling a few holes through the top of the Ranger frame rails. Save the crossmembers from the Ranger bed if you have it. They are easy to fit into the 46 box for extra support. I'm even using the steel floor out of the Ranger bed for my 46, Just going to weld it right in where the wood would normaly go.
I'd be real interested in seeing your cab mounts, if you can get pictures. I'm sure there is an easier way than the method I used to mount one of these.
Magicbus, Getting back to your original question about the fenders - '42-'47 fenders are different than '38-'41 fenders where they fit up to the box at the front of the fender down near the running boards. If you are handy with a welder and have patience, you can make them work. Steve
