OK so my trade in value when I do it through Ford comes to $6600-$8000. I am expecting about $7000 or better. From your guys experiance, when you did the estimator, how close did they come to giving you that on your trade?
The estimate on the Ford website said my trade was worth 7790-9940. Kelly Blue Book's estimate was 11000. I got 11500 for it on trade. It was an 03 Dodge Dakota SXT with a V6. So I would say you should look at few more estimates on the web like Edmunds and Kelly Blue Book. Also bring those estimates with you to the dealer. I would think you should be able to get a little more for your trade. I hope this helps.
Don't be afraid to shop dealers. In fact - you should. When my fiance bought her new car, one dealer was willing to give her $750 on a '96 Grand Cherokee with 203k. Another dealer gave her $1700 - all other numbers were virtually the same.
Take the printout from Kelly with you. Also there are sites that will tell you the actual cost of the truck for the dealer (more or less). I wouldn't pay much more than that minus your trade and incentives. Also you can go to sites that will give you a personal quote from a dealer in your area take that in to the dealer of your choice for haggling. I got a great deal on several cars and trucks using these tactics with no haggle at all. I got my 06 XLT 4x4 5.4 with tons of upgrades for 20k after incentives and my old 97 XLT 2wd. I know a lot of people think trade in is a rip off but they gave me exactly what I would have sold it for privately.Good luck!
Hey Blams2004 what did you use Sugested retail, Private party value, or trade in value to get your $11,000 number? For example mine says for (Excelent condition) Sugested retail says $11,690 witch I know is high. Private party $9,500 and Trade in $7,500. So maybe I can get more than I hoped?
I used the trade in value but I looked at several different trade estimaters and brought the highest one. I used good condition because the dealership said there arent many vehicles that fit the excellent/outstanding category. The Ford trade estimater was the lowest. I also left the dealership and told them I had to think about it, then they called me back with the higher offer.

Shop a couple dealers. They are very different in what they will give you on your trade in. I shopped three different dealers, same truck, same deal, there was a 50% difference in the trade in value of my old car. This was in December 06.
It also depends on if they think they can sell it quick... if you are going to a ford dealer and you are trading in say an 03 explorer and they already have five 03 explorers on the lot, I can guarantee you wont get what you could somewhere else.
the dealership wont usually give you any more than wholesale, if they need a sale bad enough and have some profit margin you may get them to bump up the price they are willing to pay you for your trade. always count on them trying to put as little as possible in your trade.
