Truckstell conversions

Has anyone ever heard of the Truckstell conversion systems for larger trucks. It's a overdrive system. It sounds like it was aftermarket kit offered back in the day.

Only second-hand info here. My dad had a '39 Ford 1 1/2 ton dump truck that was called a '39 Ford Truckstell on the title - if I'm reading the back of the picture right. I just figured it was a Ford model variation so I hope someone rings in here that has the scoop.

Nothing in the picture shows anything different than other 1 1/2 ton dumps.

I believe that it was the mechanical two speed for the bigger Fords, going back to possibly the Model TT. The cars and commercials (1/2 tons) had the Columbia.

Second question, if this system was installed on a '47 truck could it be installed on a '48 and up truck. I don't know anything about the older trucks. Did they basically have the same drive line as the newer trucks or were they closed tubed like the cars of the era?

From Wagner's book, if I remember correctly, the trucks (1.5) converted to Hotchkiss drive in 1939. I do st@ to be corrected, though.

I think Truckstell also sold tandem-drive conversions as well as two speed rearends.

I just read in ad on Craig's list that Saginaw made a planetary O/D in the '60's for Saginaw trannies. It appears to be all-aluminum, too. Anyone know anything about them? A Sag 4-sp with O/D might clear the Bonus Built's crossmember better than the Ford 3-sp w/ B-W O/D, is what I'm thinking, plus they were fully synchro.

Sorry for the interuption!

I'm pretty sure that at least 40+ had the open drive.

I've been doing a lot of research on OD's and haven't ran across a Truckstell.

Google "ruckstell" see if that leads to what your looking for.
They made 2 speed axles for T/A's. Huh?

I think 4tl8ford has the correct work, come to think of it, Ruckstell.

It gets curious-er. I just googled around a bit - truckstell nets 1200 hits. Many connected with 40/50's Chevy trucks and was a 2 spd OD axle produced in Oregon. You'll also find it in connection with "Tip-Toe-Matic" I think the Baumis-Truckstell dual rear axle is what Bob was talking about in the first post.

google ruckstell and you come up with the stuff Dick listed. T's and A's from California. Apparently Ford and Ruckstell had mutual interests.

And since I couldn't sleep last night: Dig a little deeper and Wolford/Worford? Underdrive/overdrive appears.

I also found some very vauge references to Fords using a "Brownie-Truckstell unit.

The Chevy units that Tim mentioned are Torque Tube units that are like the Mitchel Overdrive Units used on Torque Fords.

It appears as if Industrial Espionage was very active during the early years of the Motor Vehicle.

(Until Ol Henry hooked up with Borg-Warner and took over the Transmission/Overdrive business.)

I've been very busy at work this week and didn't have a lot of time to do any internet research on the Truckstell. I know it's Truckstell because I found this on the Truckstell ad in my '48 Hildy's book:

I can get the entire setup, all the cables, brackets and transmission for a very good price. My only concern is the above ad says it is for the F-5 and F-6 trucks, I have a F-4. As far as I know they all have the same transmission. Mine is the '51 syncronized four speed. Are the F-4 transmissions different than the larger trucks? Is there any reason this setup wouldn't work on my F-4?

I don't see why it wouldn't bolt up, the Bell Housing is the same.

Beside that it's your money I'm betting

It should work. The synchronized four speed Ford used was the W.G. T98, as opposed to the non-symchronized W.G. T9. I believe a truck bell-housing is the same from F-1s through 6s.
