Help me find a tranny for my 66 F-250 Camper Special??
If no remans are available, maybe someone could point me in the direction of a quality salvage unit. Please send email to jfalquez@juno.com Thanks in advance...Zeus
The C6 and the Cruse-O-Matic are two different trannys. The C-O-M is the auto tranny installed in your year truck.
Were are you and where have you looked?
John
The COM is not as durable as the almost bulletproof C6, but the C6 robs more power from the engine, reducing gas mileage. The C6 was used for many years, up to the middle '90s, so rebuildable parts will be available for many years. This is not so true of the COM as you apparently have observed.
If you use the truck for towing and heavy loads, I would recommend you go through the trouble to convert to a C6.
You will need to find a C6 with an FE bellhousing, from behind any truck '68 - '76 with a 352, 360 or 390.
Unlike the COM, which has a removeable bellhousing, the bellhousing on a C6 is part of the entire casting, so you have to get the entire transmission.
If you get a C-6, be sure to get the output shaft, linkage, the kickdown lever and all the little parts if you can. Although an FE C6 from a car ('66 - '70) will work, it is best if you get one from a truck. The shift levers are different for the truck than the car.
In fact, you might want to look for a '73 - '76 F-250 with a bad C-6 or 360/390, and buy the whole truck. You can convert to power front disc brakes and power steering using the truck as a donor.
Many of us have done this (my truck only awaits the disc brakes) to great success. Often the cost of the truck can be recouped by selling the uneeded parts.
Good luck, and Welcome to FTE!
Thanks for the quick reply! I was not aware that the COM and the C-6 were different trannys. I had been led to believe (by my dad) that the COM was an early variation of the C-6 with a different shift pattern (on the column). No wonder I haven’t been able to find "what I was asking for". I am located in Globe, Arizona 85501 (about 100 miles east of Phoenix). I have looked for a reman from TCI and the local parts houses such as AutoZone, checker, NAPA ect. I have also tried some of the on-line junkyards services such as uneedapart.com.
My truck was purchased new by my father in 1966 and has 113,000 original miles. It came with a matching cabover camper. Both the truck and camper are still in very good condition. This truck has lived its life in central Arizona and has no rust what so ever. My father passed away last year and now the truck is mine and I would like to finish reconditioning it like he had planned before he passed. I am not sure if the tranny in the truck is original. Back in 1975, while returning to camp from a deer hunt, my cousin was clearing his loaded rifle with the barrel pointing at the floorboard/hump of the truck (standing outside passenger door). When opening the bolt of the Remington 600 the rifle discharged (common to that model) and put a hole in the bell housing and torque converter or transmission (I’m not sure which). So my dad replaced whatever had the hole. I think it was just the torque converter and bell housing but I’m not sure.
I pulled the tranny yesterday. It has a metal tag riveted to the left side of the case by the linkage with the letters/numbers PDB D 023787. There are also some numbers cast into the case on the left side (upside down) C5MP 7006A and DIF 32. I took the tranny apart to find the damage. There were quite a few hard parts damaged. I am surprised that this tranny made it home. The reverse planet carrier gears broke and damaged the front planet carrier and took out some thrust washers. Some of the metal floating around the case damaged the reverse band slightly. The other band and clutches were in good shape. My guess is that this was caused by a small roller bearing failing and the 4 rollers that fell out of the carrier got into the planetary gears and took them out which led to the other damage. I hope I can find the parts to fix it.
I like the idea of finding a donor 73 to 76 F-250 for the C-6, brake and power steering conversion. I will do that when I find one. Meanwhile, I still want to get the cruise-O-matic going as quick as possible because my son needs the truck to drive back and forth to his job. Does anyone know where I might find a good COM from an F-250 to just drop in until I can find a donor truck? How about a source for the hard parts and master rebuild kit, bands etc. Thanks in advance!
Isn't the COM you are talking about really an FMX trans?
Anyway, the bit I'd throw in here is if this is a keeper and you don't mind spending some extra, you can put an Ford AOD or GM 700R4 in that bad boy.
Scroll down just over half way here:

Wider ratios overall and OD to boot.
Good luck.
