My truck's dome light bezel and lens are in perfect condition but the bulb and socket have nothing to attach to, it's just laying there inside the headliner. If I touch the metal of the socket to the frame, the light comes on (with the switch on), so I know it works, I just need the dome light housing. I've searched everywhere. Dennis Carpenter sells the lens and bezels but not the housing. Can anyone tell me what this thing looks like?
Jeff
I happen to have mine out right now because I'm replacing the headliner. I wonder if your dome light housing has fallen down between the headliner and the body. If you take a flashlight and shine it through the opening in the headliner you might see it hanging by the ground wire. I have got to believe it's there because it's hard to disconnect the ground wire if the headliner is in place. It's worth a look!
I actually dismantled the headliner to see if it had done just that, but to no avail. Alsso, the bulb socket has what appears to be a clip of some sort on it, but that's it. If you have a photo or any details of your housing I'd love to see what it looks like so maybe I can find something close to use.
Jeff is your truck a big back window? 'cause i have the exact same problem,, there doesn't apear to be a light bucket in mine either. Just the socket with the clip as you say. Maybe they didn't have a back reflector on the Big Back window..??!!!
Hey Ringo, yes my back window is the big one. Does your clip attach to something? I thought that maybe the clip would just attach to something on the cab body but I don't see evidence of any sort of clip tab. It does seem strange because the lens and bezel attach to clips on the headliner. Maybe there isn't a housing.
The '64 - '66 (and probably the earlier ones) use a bucket, but it isn't fastened to the body. It is held onto the headliner by the lens, with the edges of the headliner hole for the light sandwiched between the bucket and the lens.
The bucket has a short pigtail with an eye connector, and it is grounded to a lip just inside the roof with a small sheet metal screw.
Banjo, I have both styles. The bucket from the later one does not fit in the space of a Big Back window roof. The bucket has the socket sticking out the back and you can't push it down that far, because a big back window doesn't use that thin piece of headliner on an angle in the top corner between the roof and the top of the window, just a big piece across the top to the front window..
the clip mentioned just hooks to the tin on the edge of the hole where a bucket should be, sideways. The light bulb also sits sideways inthe hole. Sill not clear if there's supposed to be a bucket behind it or not tho. Could probably get away without one...
