Hello - Dave Komzelman-St Johns, Az- here- I read some earlier stuff on how to tell the diff between 223 and 262.
I collect 1963 & 1964 F100 trucks
Here is what I have learned over the years collecting 262 motors.
The early 223's had 2 hole rocker cover studs
The 262 was built between 1961 1nd 1964
The 262 never had 2 hole rocker cover.
The 223 block casting numbers on the left lower ended in CTAE 5016 and others similar.
The 262 always ended in xxTE xxxx etc - TE being Truck Engine.
The 262 had extra "webs" cast into the lower block (outside)
They also had some extra webs around the freeze plugs.
The 262 has gear drive cam -the 223 has chain drive cam.
The 262 had setllite exhaust vlv's and hard seats- 223 no...
The 262 has "Monte Carlo" style rods ( 3/8 SAE USS cap screws up through the bootom cap)- 223 has 5/16 bolts& nuts.
262 H2O pump has extra gussets on the case.
I'm not home right at the moment - but I think 223 has 7/16 haed bolts and 262 has 1/2 in.
The 262 head has water passages around the spark plug area -223 no.
The 262 has forged steel crank - 223 is cast steel.
I have 4 of these motors - thy're great.
Was lucky enough to aquire original FSeires shop manual and Fseries thru Super Duty parts books
