My '92 302 has been giving me fits trying to isolate a vacuum leak. I've traced all the lines I can find, and fixed a few problems, but can still hear a good leak. When in reverse, and especially while turning, the engine likes to bog, and occasionally stalls out. Same thing occasionally happens when in stop and go traffic after the engine has been running for a while. While messing with the power steering the other day, I could hear the leak really clearly, and seemed to be coming from the manifold. Is this likely or common? If so, how difficult is the gasket replacement? Any special tools or sizes required? Also, thanks for the replies regarding the steering gear problem, but I have to admit that I took that one to the mechanic.
Are we to assume you are talking about the gasket between the upper and lower intake plenums? If so, the hardware is all pretty simple to remove with the possible exception of the single T40 Torx head bolt between the front and rear set of runners that is hard to reach. (...not impossible but a bit of a PITA). The gasket removal/install is simple. Just make certain when you remove the upper plenum that you mark all of the vacuum lines wires etc. that you need to move to get the plenum off so re-installation is simple. Its not a common occurance that I am aware of to have that gasket fail but it is just a paper gasket and may have simply deteriorated over time.
I have had it fail on my 70 F-100 with a 92 5.0 EFI. Simple repair.
But before you dig in, you can diagnose it better. With the engine running. spray break parts cleaner in the crack where the gasket sits and see if the idle speed of the engine changes. If it does, you have a winner.
Make sure the spray parts cleaner is the stuff with the Warning Symbol for extremely flammable on the outside - the new non-flammable stuff won't work. You could also use Starting Fluid or Ether but be very stingy when spraying it around - A little goes a long ways.
