56' F-500 dual exhaust and 272 upgrades
Is there a way to get dual exhaust on a 56' F-500 with a 272?? Anybody making headers or are there factory exhaust manifolds that turn DOWN?? Looks like it'll be tight on the drivers side with the steering box?? What are some good "upgrades" for the 272?? Thinking about a 4bbl manifold OR 3 dueces- how hard are the 3 dueces to keep in sync?? Kinda want some "WOW" factor under the hood when I'm done. I've also been told a 390 bolts to my bell housing- is this true?? How hard is a 390 to sqeeze in there??
I have ram horns for dual exhaust, and there are headers available. I also have a 4bbl carb. See my gallery. Mine is a 292 Y-Block, but it is the same engine. Most people bore the 272's to 292 when rebuilding them. The 292 pistons are easily attainable. You may want to visit www.ford-y-block.com for ideas.
When I was running a 272 in my 56 f600 I bodged up a poor mans dual exhaust. cap the passenger side crossover, bend a piece to come off driver side and angle down in front of the engine and then sweep back. Didn't look great, but got me dual exhaust and cost less than $20. I now have a '68 390 in my truck. Plenty of room. Set of headers to get around the steering box was the only clearance issue. I was told the same thing about bellhousings, but don't know for sure. I went with the '68 gearbox.
yblock and fe have diffent bell housing patterns three dueces are trick to tune and not to many guys around in modern shop know how to set them. but a good speed shop should be able to set them up once they are dialed in they are pretty reliable.
