Hi All,
I finally found all of the fenders running boards, ETC to mock this ole 45 ford pickup.
We are working on the running boards to the frame bracket,(3 brackets on each side to support the running boards up) and can't seem to find the 12 5/16" bolts anywhere. Mac, C&G, Dennis Carpenter, Green Sales, Restorations,Obsolete, ETC did not have them. Has to have a 3/4" head on them to cover the 1/2" square holes in the running boards, but 5/16" bolt. 1 1/2"long.
Was wondering if anyone could put me on a company for the running boards bolts, or, what did all of you use for running board bolts, with your finished trucks use ?? Looks like maybe 3/8" carrage bolt mite work ???
Thanks for the help in advance,
Lee
Standard hardware store carriage bolts have squares & bolt threads with the same diameter. The required running board bolts have different sizes as stated in the original question.
Drilling out the running board brackets to fit carriage bolts with the proper size squares is not a viable option.
have you tried Fastenal? There web site doesn't have the head measurements, but last time I was in thier store thay had a sign that read "if we can't get it we will make it for you".
They probably still won't have what you need, but it's worth a shot.
Could you just go bigger, and file or grind the shoulders down on the bolt?
I'm not real clear about this connection. My truck doesnt have the original running boards, and I think the 41 is different.
Hey guys
I went at the local hardware store, and bought galvanized carrage bolts to use, when they are installed you can tell them from the original ones.I also took my running boards down to the place where they spray those bed liners ,and had them done ,and they really turned out nice!!!!!!!!!!Oh by the way I have a 47 ford truck!!!!!
Sorry Lee to use your thread for my question but, I looked at several 42-47 finished trucks and noticed that some running boards were bolted all the way through the running board and you could see the bolt heads on top. I was wondering if on the original boards were they bolted only through the u-shaped metal welded underneath the boards and the bolt heads didn't show from the top.
Hi loholland,
The 1 1/2" low profile carriage bolts did go all the way thru. They went thru 3 layers of sheetmetal.
1. Top side was where the rounded carriage bolt sat in the square hole to keep the bolt from turning.
2. The second layer that the bolt went thru is the brace under the running boards. The original carriage bolts actually had appx a 3/8" spacer built under the head of it,( part of the bolt, not a spacer ), so when you torqed down on the bolt, the bottom of the spacer would bottom out on the second layer, so you wouldn't smash the top of the running boards.
3. The last layer went thru the brace that riveted on the frame. Then the flat washer, lock washer, and a nut.
Hope this helps you out.
