I have reported many times with my truck that I get 18-19 city, and 23-24 highway. I haven't checked the mpg in a year, the truck now has 7,000 miles on it ( I don't work in the winter, so it's parked ) The only thing different from the last time I checked mpg, at 5,000 miles I put in synthetic fluids, mobil 1 in the engine, royal purple in the rest. Either this helped, or the truck finally got broken in. I drive 18 miles to work one way, 36 round trip, it's a mix of highway and stop and go driving. I filled up yesterday after going to work 5 days, and it took 8.5 gallons to fill it. Thats 180 miles of work driving, then 5 miles back into town to the gas station, for a 185 total miles. That comes to 21.76, or round it off to 22 mpg. Thats awesome for mostly stop and go driving, even the highway part as stop lights. It's up by 3 mpg frpm a year ago. For you new guys, I have an 04 ranger xlt supercab 4x4 4.0 sohc, 5 speed manual, and 4:10 gears with a few mods. I just got excited and wanted to tell someone, these new 4.0's are great.
I also have a programer, Doug said it would help mpg, I can't give the name, or the mods won't let this print. But I programed the computer last summer as well. It may be a combonation of things, but with gas at 3.00 bucks a gallon, I'm quit pleased !!!!!!!
I have a 05 4.0 4X4. I installed a K&N CAI and I am averaging 19-20 MPG with a mixture of driving. All with the AC on. Every time I have checked it there has been some Highway, some local, some back woods 4X4. Always comes out about the same 19-20. I am satisfied. My 99 Sable with the 3.0 would get 16-17 at the very best.
For the most part, rangers get a bad rap, the newer ones seem to do great for what they are. You figure a engine with over 200 hp in a 4x4 with 4:10 gears, and still gets over 20 mpg, thats not bad. I had a leased 2000 xlt sc 4x4 stepbed 4.0, 4:10 gears, and auto tranny, it only got 16-17 at best. It was the only ranger out of the 5 that I've had, thats been automatic. On my current 04 , I have a k&n intake, jba headers, gibson catback, e-fan, udp, programer, and 265/75-16 tires. I don't know if this stuff helped, but it sure didn't hurt. I still believe a manual tranny helps, even though on the window sticker there rated about the same.
Not bad, I'm getting around 20-21 in my 4.0L in basically all city driving. I'm very pleased as well, considering both my parents get mid-teens.
One of the things nobody mentioned is driving style. If you're takin' it easy, not gunnin' it outta lights or anything of that sort, your MPG will raise considerably.
That sounds about right, when i have my computer configured for fuel mileage and not power (a.k.a. standered ranger power) i pull around 20. if i put the ranger into low power mod i can pull almost 25 mpg, but then i pullout like i'm a semi.
Alan, not to be disrespectful and all since your new, but I think your starting to bs us alittle on some of this stuff. You don't have to make up stuff to be liked here. Just be yourself, and talk honestly about rangers. I have a 93 mach 1 mustang witha 628 cobra jet, and twin super chargers that can beat anything, it pulls the front wheels in 4 gears, but I can't afford to drive it, "NOW", how would that sound to you, bs, or what?
you can day the name just dont let it turn into a this is better than this and your wrong war. keep it relaxed and ill let it all fly

Excellent results! I get about 21 mpg from my '02 3.0 manual 4x4 Edge. Your results would casue me to consider the 4.0 when I eventually buy another truck.

Did you check mileage when it was still young and "out of the box"? This must include a gas mileage evaluation over, say, 3-5 full tanks/1000 miles and not a short jaunt or partial fills. It's pretty hard to fill a tank that's set up with EVAP to the same level each time it's filled and as we all know this can dramatically impact calculated mileage. Consider 350 miles with 17 gallons VS 350 miles with 18 gallons. I can dribble in two gallons after the nozzle, on slow fill, stops. Full on a newer (and ancient, going back to the mid 70's) vehicle is pretty ambiguous compared to full on a 60's turd where the gas actually runs out the tank and there is no air pocket in the tank to deal with since there is no EVAP system on them. Just curious is all.

When it was new, I was getting between 18-19 mpg when driving to work, this season on fill ups, it's only been holding around 8-8.5 gallons. I shake the truck, and squeeze in more after the pump kicks off, i've allways done this. On my 2 trips to W,Va (none this year) I got 23 the first one, the second (after the programer) I got 24. The only difference between last year and this year is, I put synthetic fluids in it last fall before parking it for the winter. also at that time it had 5,000 miles on it, now it has 7,000, so maybe it got broke in. I never felt that the mpg was bad, even when new, but it's great now.
Fordboy52, that wasn't a slap to the mods, when ever I print the name of my programer, it won't print my post, I get redirected or some crap, it like does it automatically. It use to print it, but not anymore. Waves has the same programer, and when writes it, it prints, but mine won't , so I don't know what gives. I can print k&n, gibson, anything else, but when I print b***c**** I get redirected.
