Today the rear brakes on my 98 ranger 2.5 auto. started locking up. I noticed it in the city when I had to get on the brakes hard the pedal started pulsing and I could hear the rears screeching. Now when I barely hit the brakes going down a hill they lock up and the abs kicks in, it seems as if the problem has gotten worse as the day goes on. I don't have much knowledge when it comes to brakes so any help will be great. Thanks.
I hope this isn't a problem like mine, i put disks on the bake because of it. the rear drums were sealed on, rebuilt the whole rearend to take new brakes. good thing too, found some dirt in bad places.
My 93 doesn't have abs but I had some of the same problem today, but I know what caused mine, we had flooding and much water on the roads to drive thru a couple of days before here in Pa. Now that they are drying out they are getting better, don't know what your weather was in Tennessee. By the way Allen D your just across the Lehigh a few miles from me.
Pull the rear drums & check for brake fluid leakage from the rear brake wheel cylinder, on to the brake linings.
If this has happened, the fluid on the linings will cause the brakes to grab.
You'll need new linings & wheel cyliners & a brake system flush with some Motorcraft PM-1, DOT-3 brake fluid, it's danged good stuff.
If you haven't flushed the brake system since 98, it's long past due.
Idealy as we shouldn't go past two years, certainly no longer than three years, without flushing the brake fluid, as it absorbs moisture, which lowers it's boiling pont & could cause a soft pedal upon hard breaking.
This moisture will also corrode the internal brake system components, & you haven't lived until you have had to pony up enough of your gold to replace a messed up ABS motor, calipers & wheel cylnders, for lack of a can of fresh brake fluid every two or three years!!!!
For those of us out there reading this, that have never changed your brake fluid & you know who you are, lol, check out "Where On The Curve Are You" at https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=366396 & click on the link to see where you are on the "curve"!!!!
Dang, part of the old link has changed, I should have double checked it before I posted, but the curve is still up at http://www.aa1car.com/library/bfluid.htm & It's a good easy informative read on brake fluid.
Wow, that's a good link. All the sudden I feel like I've negected my truck though! I'm almost postitive the fluid hasn't been flushed & changed since it was new - 7 years!
