If I understand you correctly, you installed the egt probe post turbo. I believe it will read about 200 degrees cooler than if you would have installed it pre-turbo.
I installed mine in the manifold, it was cake. On the highway, with only slight hills, I read about 900-1000. With my slide-in camper, (see gallery) I've never read any higher than 1150. Flatland, cruise control on at 70mph, about 700.
Meltdown,
I also have my gauge installed on the downpipe. I run an SCT street tune and I'm seeing about the same temps as you. The difference with a tuner is at WOT. The EGT's really climb fast with the tuner dumping all the fuel in. Phish is correct in that the EGT's will run about 200 deg hotter pre-turbo. My gauge is color-coded, green till 850 then yellow then red at 1100. When you get your programmer watch that gauge closely and if you see it going north of 1000 back your foot off. Also, watch the rate of climb. I have kept it in the green and even yellow for very short periods and have had zero problems.
The reasoning for drilling and installing in the manifold is so one can shut down or get off throttle BEFORE the temps get too high for the turbo. Some have actually put one both pre and post turbo.
Tim you are the man... I too have seen some pretty high temps for somewhat long periods. I try not to run my truck over 1350 ever, but I have done it. I have a friend who has run his '03 6.0 1350 to 1380, many, many times, and I have personally witnessed 25 mins. of over 1350 on a long hard pull. BTW the truck has 88,000 hard towing miles, some performance mods, and runs perfect.
I agree 1350 would be my upper limit for extended periods
Mine has run several times at 1580-1600, but only for strip runs for no more than 6-7 seconds. You should see the Autometer Nexus blinking BRIGHT red. Everyone in the stands see's it and asks if I know what I'm doing. lol Of course I don't! Hahahahaha
does anyone know the exact temp difference between post turbo and pre turbo ,
I want to get the superchips tuner for my 6.0 and install a egt gauge, but would rather not go through the pain of taking manifold off drilling and tapping hole ,then reinstalling the manifold .
