Want to buy another Ranger, what should I offer?

I found a 94' Ranger XLT regular cab 2.3L 5 speed with A/C on Craigslist. It has 131500 miles on it, original owner, new Michelin tires last fall, timing belt changed last year, new shocks, and brakes done within the last couple of years. It looks in good shape from the pics, spoke to the owner who said he had all the reciepts from any work done to the truck. He selling it because he bought a new Ranger. He is asking 3495.00 OBO, Kelly Blue Book gives a price for that truck at 2150.00 private party sale, 3100.00 Retail. Edmunds was similar.

I doubt he would be willing to accept 2150.00, and I think that the fact that he has reciepts of the work done recently, and that the complete history of truck is there does add value. The question is how much? I was thinking of about $2700.00 or is that too much?

Also he said he has kept track of fuel mileage from the beginning and said the truck averages between 21-22 on a mix of city and highway does this seem low?

Tires, timming belt, shocks are all normal replacement Items on a truck of that mileage. If any of them were bad and not replaced you would deduct for them. Private pary is just that, the value for a truck being sold by a private party. Retail is a price for a car lot, that has cleaned the truck up and has the overhead of running the lot. I would go with the private sale number and maybe go up a little if you want the truck really bad. Make him an offer and give him you phone number, check back next week and see if he is anymore interested. The worse thing you can do is fall in love and go in with the attitude that you MUST have it. IF you don't get it, he world won't end and you might get a good/fair deal.

You have to realize that you will only get about 2-3 more good years out of the truck.Things just start to happen after that many years and the mileage.

I'd offer him the private sale price and just see what he says.

Reading these forums I think there would be more than just 2-3 more good years left in that truck. Of course it all depends how many miles are driven each year. I get the impression that with regular maintence 200,000 miles can be expected out of these trucks. I understand that by that time you can expect to have replaced things like water pumps, altenators, starters, clutchs and things of that nature.

The vehicle is worth what it's worth and not any more. It's a very basic/standard 12 year old four banger Ranger and even considering it's age, these vehicles are still readily available for purchase just about anywhere. Now just to give you a heads up, KBB prices tend to be high. I would suggest looking at Edmunds and NADA for a few more benchmarkes. I would also not place a substantially high $ value on the one owner thing either. Now if it was a 60's muscle car, one owner and the like, maybe a different story. But this is a Ranger. On a final note, I would suggest after doing your do your homework that you go drive it. If you like it, offer him a bit less that what it's worth (leave room for negotiating) and without adding $ for emotional reasons. Explain how you arrived at your figure. If he is unwilling to counteroffer with a more sane price, just walk on him. That's right, leave. He's not into reality yet. Then keep an eye on it and check back from time to time. The smartest way I've found to buy vehicles for the *correct* price is to NOT get overly excited and cave in. Buy them on YOUR terms and for a fair price. Time can be your friend.

If you can do it, cash talks. Walk in with your purchase price in cash. But, only if he can produce a clear title... Just make the offer 'will you take $xyz in cash?' and show him those crisp $100 bills... Some say a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. If he is flexible, he knows he has a for sure sale Right Now.
It does pay to be slightly rude in first offers, you never know what'll happen.

The thing of it is, ypu can get 02's, and 03's for around 5 grand with the duratec I-4, and less miles, I would shop a round. The duratec is alot better performing engine, not a better engine, put more hp, and torque, plus they get better mpg than the lima. I would pony up alittle more money, and get somrting a little newer with less miles. Not that the 94 wouldn't be a good truck, but the price he's asking is close to what you could buy a newer truck for.

Funny, because someone does...I've had folks want to buy my truck with almost 264,000 miles for the price I bought mine for three years ago--$3,000.

I haven't bitten just yet, though. A Duratec 2.3L SuperCab truck might do that trick one of these days...

I didn't call him back, I thought I would wait for about a week and see if he still had it. Well it popped up on Craigslist for $3000.00 OBO. I might call him today, and see if he will take book value. If not I will keep looking. Thanks for the advice, gave me a good prospective in this process.

I just bought one exactly as you described paid $1700.00. Have spent about 300.00 getting everything fixed the way I like em. Still needs interior to be cleaned up a bit (clean seats and carpets) so I be spending a few more dollars but you get the idea.

I don't doubt that. As David Hannum said, "There's a Sucker Born Every Minute". I have done business with a number of them. My dad said, " Something is worth what someone is willing to give for it" and I have found that to be true.

Talk is cheap and of little substance; it's when money hits the table and either a title is signed (ideal case) or a written and signed agreement (both parties) to hold the vehicle for X days in consideration of X dollars is the real moment of truth.
