'65-'66 vintage original radio measurement
Looking to replace the cheesy am/fm cassette in my '66 with (hopefully) a stock radio, but I'd like to know if the stock radio chrome-ish shiny surround will cover the existing rectangular hole cut in the dash.
Can anyone measure the up-down "height" of this chrome surround?
Thanks!

stock radio
I do not have the dimensions for the stock radio however I do have it in the garage "somewhere" which is right next to "I don't know where" So I can get it for you this weekend. I'll try and take a picture of it and post it to my gallery.
The previous owner had replaced the stock radio with an FM cassetter player. They had to cut the dash, the stock radio has a fairly narrow oval shape.
I replaced the cassette player with a cd player, I had to elongate the opening to accomodate the cd player. The downside is that the cassette player was a little "thicker" than the cd player so I have an slight gap that is not covered by the faceplate which makes me crazy but no one else has commented on yet.
One of these days I may have someone fabricate a small face plate to cover that up. one of there days.....

I am 99.9% sure it won't fill your hole.
I'm in the same boat as you. Some moron cut my dash to install a K-Mart radio. The opening is too tall for the stock radio to cover it, and the ***** on the junk radio are farther apart than the Ford one.
Since it's already ruined, just cut it bigger for a DIN opening radio and put whatever you want in there. I'm actually going to use a oem Ford radio from a 1990s truck.

Skinsey:
Let me know what you want for that radio-does it work?
I realize that the stock radio is probably narrower than the hole in my dash, but if it's not TOO much narrower, I may try to install it anyway and deal with whatever gap results. I actually prefer to rummage thru the AM waves in my old truck, I can listen to CD's in my Volvo...

One idea I had was to take a sheet of styrene plastic and cut out a 'backer plate' for the radio face that would cover the opening around the perimeter. Wouldn't look as clean as the correct installation, but still will look better than big gaps! You can get it at most hobby shops. It's sold in different thicknesses and is marketed by Evergreen Products and Plastruct.

The stock dash had 3 holes for the stock radio mount. In other words there was no center rectangular cutout like most people think of. Just three holes. To me it was confusing until I saw how the stock radio was set up and installed my own. If nobody gets Skinsey's radio I may be interested. My faceplate has a stripped dial string gear. I wont go into detals on that only the fact that I could use an extra radio or faceplate/tuner assy.

I will get a picture of it today and post it in my gallery. I have no idea what they are worth....anybody have a guess?? As far as the hole in the dash cut a patch piece and weld it in. Take measurements from another truck and redrill the holes...no problem at all Ive done it for a friend of mine, it took an hour or two.
