I am fairly new to the site but have found tons of useful info. My problem is this. The ABS light comes on only when I set the parking brake. Then, sometime is goes off when the brake is released and sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, if I shut it off and restart it will stay off. Runs great otherwise.
My ABS light has come on a few time during braking. I've never been able to find any rhyme or reason for it. Change the brake fluid, service brakes, etc on a regular basis. Never had any brake failure. ABS system seems to function properly. Shutting off and restarting the engine always shut the light off.
Did you notice if the ABS system is still functional when the light is on ?
If the light is on, the computer disables the ABS system. What kinda braking caused it? Were you really getting on it? If you slam the brakes on and the ABS kicks in the light will come on, but I believe it stays functional as soon as the light goes off.
I just bought the truck for my son. It was running like crap and was dirty and I got a great deal on it. I have a scanner and several engine related codes were stored and I have fixed all of those. Are ABS codes accessed the same way? The brakes work great other than when you step on the peddle, they start grabbing immediately. Maybe I am just used to 4 wheel disc brakes. I will check the adjustment on the rears. How do I tell if it is 2w or 4w abs? If it is just 2w and would rather it just didn't work. My experience with past fords is your stopping distance increases with 2 wheel ABS and can be dangerous at times like hard braking over a bumpy surface.
What you are now describing sounds like maybe there is a wheel cylinder problem & maybe it's leaked brake fluid on the linings & causing them to grab, so I'd pull the rear drums & have a look see.
Check the front calipers too.
The whees have reluctor sensors on them, that sense wheel rotational speed, so if the sensors are messed up, or the vanes on the wheel's are cloggeg with mud, or iron filings, or other trash, the signals sent to the ABS system can get corrupted, such that the system gets confused about what the wheel/s are doing, when braking.
I don't know what codes your scanner will read, what does it's owners manual say it will do????
One easy way to determine what ABS system it has, is to look under hood, drivers side, just aft of the shock tower, low on the inner fender wall, at the ABS motor. Two lines going to the rear wheels = RBAS, Two lines going aft & two foward to each front wheel = 4wheel ABS.
