Will I Make It?

Hi again guys,

Hi have a tired 302 with 154k and burning about a quart per 1k. It is a 94 150 RC LB M5OD.<O

My question is will I make it to Myrtle Beach from Cincinnati while pulling two bikes on an open trailer?

Some useful info:

I have a built 351 and a ZF to go in later this summer so I really don't care about this engine lasting much longer (as long as I can make it back).

The motor has had a tick under acceleration for a while.<O</O

For all of you guys that ran up a 302 in miles, is this motor still trustworthy and what factors help you judge?<O</O

Thanks,
Mike

Drive it nice, and nothing should really happen to it. I think I'd trust it, as lots of guys have taken this engine waaay further than 154k

Take plenty of oil with you because it'll probably burn more under tow.

The ticking you hear could merely be an exhaust leak. An indicator could be that it gets louder the more pedal you give it.

Change over to a High-mileage oil, by Castrol, Valvoline, or anyone for that matter. Your oil consumption will decrease.

Ohhhhh nooooo......that will just burn more expensive oil

I tried that a while back and had no difference. This motor is burning pretty good.

Thanks for all of the opinions guys!

Take the extra oil, cheapest 20W50 you can find, keep your foot out of it, and as long as it is ticking it will run. Just rebuilt a 302 with about 170,000 on it. It was still runnning but my son heard a louder knock from the bottom end and he had the money so we rebuilt it. Pulled the heads and #8, #6, #2 & #3 pistons all had broken rings, (3 or more pieces), #8 & #3 piston had holes burn through the tops that you could stick a pencil through, AND IT WAS STILL RUNNING and he was driving it everyday. I'd like to see a Chevy do that!!

I too would vote first to look for a cracked exhaust manifold.

Leaking exhaust manifold may cook the vac lines over the passenger side.
If you need an emergency fix, reflective foil duct tape can shield vulnerable components.

The 86 engine I just pulled from my truck had over 300,000 miles on it and it would burn about a quart of oil a day and had some knarly piston slap, but I could still rev the hell out of it! I tried to blow it up but it wouldnt go! Dont use 20w50, get some 30HD. You should be fine on that engine, its bulletproof.

Should be fine. Just bring extra oil like everyone has suggested. Check all your fluids as well.
