I have been doing quite a bit of work lately on my Bronco and occassionally have needed to use a press which I don't have. I take parts to a buddy's house and use his, but man what a pain. To me it seems to be worth it to buy one, and I was just wondering if you guys had a press at home and how much do you use it? Also what should you look for size wise if you're shopping for one? I have seen 6 ton, 12 ton, and 20 ton readily available. Thanks
I've got a 20 ton in my shop and I find it is a lot like carrying a .45 acp in your pocket. It's always in the way but when you need it you know where it is and it's priceless.
I agree with the others, you may not use it often, but it's good to have around when you do need one. I had bearings pressed on my axles a while back and the shop charged me $45 for each axle. For that price, I could have bought my own shop press!
I ordered a 6 ton press from harbor frieght.com for 69 dollars plus shipping and the total only comes to 75 dollars. I called the local harbor freight and they do not carry this model so I ordered it on line. It will be here in two weeks and I'll let you know how it works.
Yes, I have a home-fabbed 12 ton press that I made about 6-8 years ago. It's one of those things that takes a lot of space until you need it, then it's worth tripping over every now and then.
I built my own with a quality USA made 20 ton jack for about the cost of a China import and it's one of my most used tools. If I was to redo the project I'm not sure you need a 20 ton and would probably use a smaller ( less expensive jack) as I have never come close to using the full capacity. ( I mounted a pressure gauge on the jack). Even with 8 inch channel iron construction you would bend the frame before you could use the full 20 Tons.
Go for it. I have a 20 ton Chinese job that I bought at a Homier tool show for $99.95 + tax. It weighed 220 pounds but there was no freight since I hauled it home myself. I had just done the Ujoints on one of my vehicles and really needed one. I decided I was going to have my own even if I only used it once a year. Sure enough, I haven't used it yet but I have got some good use out of the jack that came with it.
I got the press I ordered from Harbor Freight and it is a bench top 6 ton press. It should be sfficient for light mechanical stuff. I only had to pay 5.75 shipping for it and it arrived USPS. Have not used it yet, but its sure is nice to have.
