on the towing teh tongue weight is more important than the total trailer weight, and the 9" is semi floating so the axle shafts themselves are having to carry the weight so I would keep the tongue wieght down to the GVWR of the truck after adding the weight of the truck to it.
So you mean pulling no more than GCVW and that is including trailer and truck? Toungue weight is probably no more than 250 lbs but load is much more???
If you have stock tires you will run out of power towing before you will need to worry about the 9 inch being able to handle the torque required to move the load. (assuming axle weight loads are not exceeded either)
It is a 75 F150 Supercab 2WD. Currently it has a 429 with a C6. I have added a 4 core radiator, deep sump aluminum trans pan and 30,000 GVW cooler with fan for the tranny. I am debating on the gears for the rear. I have a set of 411's and 355's. I have a small collection of 9 inch stuff... I have a D70 as well but then I would have to find the heavy stuff for the front. Keeping the 9 would make my life MUCH simpler right now! I primarily travel here in the mountains(small) but make a few road trips to flat land maybe twice a year. It would be neat to have an extra third member I could swap out real quick for the flat land trips.

I agree with your logic of being able to trade pumkin out. Given your 429 and C6, I would suggest a 3.73 (or 3.55) over a 4.10 for a overall gear since you have a big block and no OD. Havin g a after "pic" with 4.10 in it to swap in would be interesting though.
