Question What all does the netural saftey switch go to??

O.K,this is a weird question, you guys might remember my post about the starter selonoid and Ignition Actulater (Hockey Stick)thing?
I got everything basiclly working now,the ignition switch will turn the power on and off again but I still have to jump off the selonoid so I tracked it down to the Netural saftey switch.
I called to see if my local Auto parts store had one and he needed the numbers off the switch,(Im in a small town and he didnt have one)while under the truck I saw the switch must have shorted out or something, the wires going to it were all burnt back and touching each other, since I couldnt get one today I taped the wires so they wernt touching anymore to keep the circut working and put it back on.
I went to the store and noticed a big improvment with the general preformance of the truck and my mileage too, normally I would have had to stop and put another $20.00 in(it's 45 miles round trip to Wally world)?
Could these wires grounded aginst each other have caused this big of a problem?
Im going to the big city tomorrow lol and will pick up a new switch but am curious if this has been my problem with mileage ect.. all the time?
Thanks
Russell

i think it is just a placebo effect. the switch only controls the reverse lights and provides a interuption for the starter if it is not in P or N it does not affect the ignition.

It is possible to reduce performance and reduce gas mileage.
A scenario of how this could happen is if you bypassed fuse links and/or fuses and the wires. Then if they were shorted to a bad ground or the resistance of the wires dropped the voltage to ground this would let the wires get very hot carrying a lot of current to ground in the run mode. As a result this would put a very big load on the alternator making it try to turn backwards as it generated current and in turn would put a large load on the engine. This of course would cause reduced performance and gas mileage. This could also cause a fire.

Interesting,I havnt had reverse lights for a while and my Alt would sometimes make a whineing sound and my dash light(Batt) would come on and flicker then go out?
As for a fire, man thats scary, the wires were melted back about an inch or so and all touching!
Im going to get the saftey switch this afternoon and see what happens, either way it's going to be great being able to crank it from inside the cab again lol!
