I would like to change my transmission fluid to 75/90 synthetic in the 46 three speed. Is this a good combination? I read where one guy was using 10/30 motor oil in his T-5. Everyone jumped on him pretty hard for that!
I personally run mineral oil 80-90 in mine. I tried synthetic a while back in my '35 , and blew the box shortly afterwards! Co-incidence maybe, but the synthetic stuff looks light; another problem I had with it was it tends to leak unlike mineral oil. Don't know how it reacts with synchro bronze, might pay for you to enquire. I know a lot of E P additives can attack yellow metals.
I'm going to go to a good transmission shop and see if anyone there can give it an answer. Speaking of leaks. The only leaks out of the tranny are from the drain plug! Anyone else have a leaky drain plug? Maybe some pipe thread sealant will work with the fluid change.
make sure to never EVER use a GL-5 lube in there. you want GL-3 or Gl-4 only. all the new syns are GL-5. Gl-3 and 4 are hard to come by now. coastal still makes some and so does chevron.
yes they are marked. gl-3 will be around for a while. after that you will be SOL and will just have to use a gl-5 oil and expect to rebuild it more often.
I went looking for GL-3 or 4 today. The only thing I found was Coastal, 80/90,, API service GL-5, GL-4, GL-3. I hope this multi-service gear oil is the right stuff. Went to four places and Auto Zone had it.
nope! wrong stuff. i would return it. the coastal psec sheet says never to use that in a yellow metal application. i was at walmart and they had bottles of gl-4 supertech oil. which is what i put in my 9''. so check around.
Thanks Gary, and thanks 390ford. I have an inquiry in the process with Royal Purple, and need to get back to them with information on the inner mechanics of the old tranny (no surprise that they werent familiar with a 46 trans). I also told them of 46 Jailbar's experience with the 35 and syn, saying that there wasnt a firm conclusion what caused the breakdown.
No offense intended, just wanted to see what they had to say. I didnt think this would become as complicated as motor oil, but it is getting there.
Nothing with these trucks is ever easy Mike. I'm glad that you did bring this up subject, though. I just picked up a totally rebuilt '47 3 spd I'm going to drop into one of my '46's this weekend, and I never even thought much about the oil specs.
The guy from Royal Purple didnt get back in touch with me. I guess either he found that their lube wouldnt work, or that there wasnt much market with old ford trucks and why spend anymore time. And to think I tried to seek help from an FTE Sponsor!
There is a product by Amsoil, synthetic, GL-4, but I have read so much negative press here on FTE about Amsoil it is not an option. So like 390Ford indicated, syn in the old trans is a no go. Tractor supply here I come.
if you contacted RP by email give them about 7 days to get in touch. they are small and get thousands a week. a quick look shows RP will work fine for you. i buy my RP from www.karlracing.com 8.50 a quart , zero tax and free shipping. the price you see is what you pay. i think they are great to deal with.
