Hi,new to your club,I am just starting my project,429-c6,motor and trans done, but thats all, I need to do all,I've read alot and first thing is ifs, theres a big swap meet in Pomona CA this sunday so I will go shopping, being on a budget I can't decide between Volare from a yard for $250 + repairs + template, or piece together a mustangII which seems like it might be to lite for the BB, plus I want to drop 3-4 inches when done, Help me Bro's I need a push!
I run a MII in my 56 with a 351C. I like it, but I think it's a little lightweight. The stock version certainly will be overloaded with your BB. Aftermarket (pricy) MII setups can be plenty beefy, but I get the idea you are looking for a junk yard unit.
A lot of guys here run the volare setup and I have heard both good and bad about it. No personal experience there.
Have you considered grafting a full-size Ford IFS (Crown Vic, etc)? Plenty heavy duty enough and very inexpensive. fatfenders56 has done many of them. Check out his gallery.
Also, the Jag IFS is a pretty nice install. Rave reviews. Look for recent threads on that. There is a lot of info. The guys "down under" (Australia) run those a lot as they are plentiful.
Just a heads up, I had a BEAR of a time, (and I'm not alone here), trying to get headers in and around the steering box in my '53 with the Volare clip. I'm running a 400 Ford bored to 410. I actually ended up rebuilding my motor mounts just to get my headers to fit around the darn thing. AND, it's still a tight fit. I would also consider a Dodge Dakota clip as well. But, where there's a will, there's a way
Welcome to FTE, great site, with a bunch of great guys, and a TON of info in this forum for your effie project
if I remember the big Fords had to be sectioned in the center and that sounds like it is to easy to make a booboo, I think the sanderson short's and a good muffler shop should be able to work around the Volare, what do you think?
John Niolon (famous for doing everything on his truck at least twice) did both a volare and MII install on his 53 with a 460 in it. He has great illustrations and writeups. Here's the link to his page: http://www.clubfte.com/users/jniolon/
I have an Impala IFS in my 56 with the 460/C6 build, I didn't do the install but theres plenty of room if you redo the inner fenders a bit. I run stock exhaust manifords and don't have a problem. I'd like headers but I know finding the right ones will tend to be $.
IMO the MII is better suited for lighter weight vehicles. If it were me I'd opt for the Jag, easier install than the Volare, much better unit all around, Jag weight is very similar to our trucks, little-no clearance issues, and for the purists Jag is part of FoMoCo.
depending on where your engines sits in between the frame rails... height as well as offset... you can run into header interference problems with some headers and the upper control arms on a Volare also.... ask me how I know... I can give you pictures if you want

Exhaust shop could. But, I was able to buy pre-bent pieces and built my own dual exhaust.
I'm not down playing the Volare front clip. But, if I had to do again, I wouldn't go that route.
Pomona was a bust, 90% bowtie, till I ran across a shop guy in a '56 that was the bomb, has volare and digs it, that convinced me. Picking up the k mem and starting in the morning, thanks for the help
