adjustment or new clutch?

I have a 92 explorer v6. My clutch stopped working this morning, it just basically goes to the floor. I will have the clutch all the way in, while in 1st gear and the car will move forward cuz its acting like thats the sweet release spot. When driving its very hard to get in gear. I thought that it might need to be adjusted, but then i thought that it might be a hydrolic clutch, and i thought you cant adjust those.

Any thoughts? I've been calling around to see how much a clutch replacement would be and a lot of places are saying around $720 (including aamco)

is that a fair price?

I can only comment on the price of a replacement. Did you try any 4x4 shops? My dad had the one in his BII done a few years back and they only charged $500. Not only that, they were pretty much charging $500 no matter what type of truck, strange but true. You might check into that.

That's not a bad price seeing how its a 4x4 or I'm guessing it is.

Your hyd clutch could have gone bad but I can not recall if it's external or internal. If it's external then I would check it to see if it is moving/traveling correctly and if not bleed it and see if it comes back.

If it's internal you may still be able to see if you have enough travel. At this point you have to pull the trans no matter what so I would have hyd cyclinder replaced as well as the clutch and disk plus get the flywheel resurfaced.

k... I'm not really sure whats going on, but the same day my clutch was doing that i went back later that day and it did the same thing (on saturday)...

I just read arringtons post, so i went out side to see if anything changed and now it works. there is a little more play, like 1/2 inch then normal.

But i kinda left this out.... in the morning when it is cold, the clutch release is different, then when it warms up it goes back to normal. The only problem is when i left on saturday morning it was like it always was, but instead of it getting better, it got worst. I'm thinking its something to do with the hydraulic, there was no leaks, maybe air, i havent had my tranny serviced since i got it.

when i bought it it supposedly was a newer clutch. Its like an industrial clutch cuz it is hard to push down with my leg, and if i leave it in on a red light my quad starts to shake a little, haha.

The clutch itself is fine. The hydraulics are failing. Not sure about the '92 particularly but most Explorers and Rangers had an internal slave cylinder so you may not see the slave leaking unless its running out the bellhousing.

With it being that old, I would replace both the master and slave cylinders and be done with it.

Assuming the slave in internal, they will have to pull the transmission to change it. That's probably $300 labor. Plus the slave cylinder at $100 to $150. If you change the master cylinder too that's probably another $75 labor and $50 to $100 in parts.
