D4 stands for 1974, A is for the Ford car line, E is for the Engine department of Ford engineering. 6015 is the basic casting code for an engine block, AA denotes the change level. They start with A and run through the alphabet with the exception of the letter "I" which can be confused for a 1 or an L. "A" denotes the original status of the part, B denoting one change, etc. When they run out of letters they start over again with AA like yours. That 6 on the end...? I don't know, my books don't say.
