i have a 302 i am tearing down to rebuild, i have taken the heads off, oil pan and lifters, then i started to take the harmonic balancer off the crank...this is where i've stopped. i can't get this stupid thing off!! i took the bolt out out and beat on it till my hand was numb. i thought this thing just slid off!!! it's killing me. this motor was given to me by my instructor that has had it in the back of his room for years. when did they start putting these things on and how do i get it off? please help
Mtthwvn73... Remember that the harmonic balancer is part of the crankshaft. Mark it if you need to. It is balanced to the crank. When getting an old block you have to be careful to get the harmonic balancer for that crank.
You need a tool specifically made for that balancer. First understand the structure. There's an inner drum which is tightly pressure fit onto the crank, a rubber isolation layer, and a thick, heavy outer drum with the mass offset and timing marks. Any attempt to pull it with a gear puller will only grab the edges of the outer drum and rip it off the rubber in which case you must get a new balancer. Gotta have a "harmonic balance puller" made for the Ford or it's impossible. Some auto parts stores (AutoZone) loan them out.
thanks alot for the help...i thought i was going to have to hang it up and swing off of it lol. i really appreciate the help, hey since you guys seem like ford experts...what do the numbers under the intake manifold mean? (it's on the block) it says 7K7 on one side...in the middle it has a big "5" and then on the other end it says "5.0" what does this mean...is this a newer motor? or is this just some factory stuff that don't really mean much. i am planning on putting it in a 75...will it work?
The balancer and crank are keyed, so be sure not to lose the woodruff key when you take the balancer off. The balancer isn't press fit on the crank, it's just stuck and tight from being on there for years and years.
the 7k7 is the date the block was cast. 302's became 5.0's in the early 80's. just above the starter there should be another casting number such as E6SE. my guess would be your block was cast the 7th day of oct (?), 1987. cheers, garsten
man...would this work in a 75 ford? can i put a intake and a carb on it? i have looked all over that motor and i haven't found any more numbers, could they be somewhere else? thanks again for the help...this has been a big help.
Don't see why it wouldn't work on a '75. You just have to get a carb and intake for it. My old man and I just finished putting a '90 302 in a '66 F100, and after pulling all the old electonic bits off of the '90, it was just a matter of putting a carb, intake, headers, and ignition on it.
