OK bought a '83 f250 4x4 351 from the state. the bid sheet said it had a bad motor. I figured heck if i get it and really is bad I got a 460 that will fit right in there. well i put 426.00 on it and got it. when i got it home, i hooked up a batt. sprayed a little either and it run until it burnt off the either. at ths point i noticed it had a skip and the valvecover was unbolted and loose on the left side. took the cover off spun it again and the 2nd cyl back the intake valve wasn't moving. i took the rocker off and after 20 mins. finaly got the push rod out. it was nearly bent into a Z. So now being the shadetree mech. that i sometimes can be, I tried to straiten the push rod. I got strait enough that it runs pretty good. enough too get it off the trailer and in the shop. and yes i ordered a new push rod. now it ticks when it runs i'm sure some of this is the bent push rod but it sounds like all of the lifters are ticking. could there be more bent push rods(i plan on checking all of them). could the lifters be rusted since the valvecover was loose and got rained in for the 5 years that it set up. the oil was defenitly milky
change the oil first ,pull the valve covers check all the pushrods, tap each of the valve stems with a mallet see if any are stuck or bent, check valve timing, poor some oil right down a few push rod holes to get oil on the top of the lifters right away if everything looks good put it back together and start it see what happens by the way your 460 will not bolt up to a 351w tranny
ive got the tranny to go with the engine but i won't have to use it. i got the 351 in good shape with a new set of push rods. 4 were bent real bad and 3 were just a little. i wonder if over reving it cause this. mabe the motor will be ok now
thanks for the help
