New trucks

This may well be somthing many dont want to hear... But, WOW! Why in the world are people still buying Ford diesels!?!?!?!?!

I'm shopping for a new truck as we speak here, and have narrowed it down to an F250 with the V10 for sure, with the help of this site.

The reason I'm looking is the truck is I bought my current truck with plans on moving to North Carolina... Those plans changed, now I'm getting stuck spinning all over Michigan with a 2wd dully.

My current truck is an '04 Dodge/Cummins HO 3500. It has NEVER seen a garage in 33,000 miles/2.5 years, and the thing has been all around a GREAT vehical! Its just no longer practical, and to tell the truth I'm pretty boored with the diesel acceleration. God knows the power is there, but its not going to win ANY races. (normal day to day life with any diesel compared to a gasser).

I average 18/19 mpg no matter where I'm driving (empty with 4.10 gears), if I baby it I can get it up to 22 pretty easy (even more booring!!!).

I've test drove the Ford diesels on the lot even though I was really wanting the V10. Dealers almost fall over when I ask if they have a V10 on the lot with the gas prices where they are, so a test drive is out of the question. And, THIS is why I started looking on the internet, thinking the V10 must be REALLY BAD is not 1 dealer in 2 states has one on his lot!!!

From what I've read here I've GOT to tell you guys, DITCH THE CRUMMY FORD DIESELS!!! If your really hung on having a diesel under the hood GET A DODGE!!! I personally want some speed with my power, and am not TO worried about the 10 to 12 mpg I'm hearing I can expect with a V10, 6 speed when I consider how much fun it will be to drive & it pulls like a horny mule!

The Dodge is a great diesel truck guys (not impressed with the Hemi at all)! Give the Cummins a drive!!! Or get a V10! Either way good luck with your trade in's!

I work in the automotive industry, and I'm sorry to burst the bubble, but brand loyalty (Ford is better than whatever) is just damn stupid!!! I could take you to 10 different plants here, and in Canada where they make parts for Dodge, Ford, Chevy, Toyota ALL in the same building, using the same equipment with different programs / die's. The only differance is in the options available.

Again, best wishes, sorry if the reality check is hurtfull, good luck with the trade-in's!!!

Obviously you can purchase whatever truck, with whatever engine you want, but if you are ruling out the Ford 6.0 mainly because of what you read here, you are not making an informed decision. As many many posts have said on FTE, people often come here when they are experiencing problems, so you see what might appear to be 'lots of problems'. If a person owns a vehicle, ANY vehicle, and that person is completely satisfied with it, they really have no reason to come to a site like this. Before you ask 'why do you come here?', let me say I started coming here soon after I bought my 03 6.0, because it was my first diesel and I just wanted to 'learn'....... now I'm hooked and can't stay away!!!

At first I worried that I had made a bad choice, but soon discovered that my truck was the best I have ever owned. Traded for my current 05 only because I wanted a crew cab and I got a great deal (IMO). I've owned 1/2 ton trucks most of my life, mostly Fords, but a couple of Chevrolets and a GMC thrown in there. Pretty much liked them all. Am a bit 'partial' to Fords since my Dad retired from there and I get vehicles on the A/Z plan.

Although I have never owned a V-10, my 6.0 has all the power (and speed) I could ask for.

You mention the 6.0 won't win any races. Well, if I wanted a race car, I would buy one, certainly not an F-250 truck (or ANY truck for that matter).

Lot's of folks put tuners on these trucks, and that's perfectly fine, it is after all, 'your' truck. But in reading these posts for sometime now, it is my humble opinion that the tuners, and other modifications, cause at least some of the 'problems' reported here. Certainly not ALL, but some.

As I said at the start, you, and anyone else, can buy what you choose, and make whatever modifications you choose. Whether whatever you buy, or do to your vehicle, is the right thing to do is a debate that cannot be 'won'.

I won't need any 'luck' with my trade-in, since I have no immediate (or long term for that matter) plans to trade it. 10k miles, not even a hiccup. Mileage is about what I expected, and based on my experience with my 03, it will improve soon. Towing my boat, or my trailer, or my parents camper, NO PROBLEM.

It's your money, your choice. Good luck to you, whatever vehicle you decide to purchase.

Hope I haven't offended anyone, not my intention at all.

diesel dog?

I guess you would be bored with diesel acceleration if you got a Dodge. Talk about a dog. Sure it pulls like stink, maybe even better than my 6.0 depending upon the load, speed, etc. But unloaded, daily driver stuff is a different thing altogether. But if you think the V-10 will win you some speed contests, you're smoking something illegal. It ain't that great. A properly tuned 6.0 is pretty quick. Line it up. I'll put the money on my truck every time. Hope I haven't offended anyone, not my intention at all.

dlpinkc,

Sounds like you've got a great truck there. Glad to hear you've found a good practical vehical that fills all your needs! I've owned 41 vehicals in my life, and am still looking for the "perfect", "fills every need" vehical today! (I honestly believe the F250 may be it!!!)

I've been driving the diesel for a while now, and havent even considered adding the aftermarket box's because the horror stories some have with them. Not worth the chance to me when your talking about a $5,000 motor!!!

I dont really want to win races, but how fun is it to smash the throttle and get pushed back in the seat once in while!?! EVERYBODY likes it time to time! If I really feel the need, I can even light up the rear end on the dooly! Even then my wifes Suzuki tracker will give me a run for my money in a 0-60 race!!! Pretty sickening!

I've been a member of the Dodge forums for a long time, & have never seen NEAR the kind of problems there that I've seen here. Its REALLY scary to see that the problems arent even related to one area, its the whole engine thats causing break downs for many guys!

Most of the cummins complaints are mileage debates, a rattle here or there, or somthing like that. Nothing thats caused anyone to be towed. (sure, given a search I'm sure somebody, somewhere has had a break down, its certainly a RARE truck though!)

DRIVE WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY! I hope at least one of the guys having headaches reads this and realizes that brand name means NOTHING, even Honda's come from the same plants making the Fords. I see it every day!

Like I mentioned, If anyone is having diesel problems, has there hearts set on owning a diesel... Give the Dodge a drive! There great trucks, just dont have the acceleration I'm looking for. I've had enough of being the slowest thing pulling away from EVERY stop light no matter how hard I drive it.

How many of you guys knew Ford is a primary stock holder in Cummins!?! Ford purchased the stock in hopes of booting Dodge and renigging on the preexisting Cummins/Dodge contract. Couldnt get it to legaly happen though.

man, you are yet another example of proof that dodge/cummins really sucks! go test drive a 6.0 for me. you will be amazed, and i can bet you will put the 7-10 mpg gasser on hold while you look at more powerstrokes. these engines like to be revved, and by the sound of your driving habits, you should have Ford GT instead of a truck. our fleet consists of two 7.3 powerstrokes, two 6.8L v-10's, one 6.0 dump truck (it hauls for a 100000 pound F-550 with a huge aluminum box on the back), and we are taking delivery on yet another 6.0 tomorrow morning. before you go and try a gasser, test drive the 6.0 for me...

bdude,

I too have owned many cars and trucks... including 3 Dodge trucks(one with 318 and the others were cummins). I have to say that I LOVED the cummins and would keep a cummins diesel if it was ONLY a work truck and I ONLY wanted to tow with it. Some of us want more and no truck is perfect (dodge interior is the worst of all trucks!). The ford diesel gave me both diesel power, better mileage than the gasser, good looks, and an excellent interior. I just traded my bmw for an 06 Ford 6.0 and am going to tell you that diesel power isn't boring with the ford. I also currently have a 99 F-150 that I dumped some serious $$$ into. It has 411, rebuilt tranny, vortec supercharger, diablo chip, yada, yada, yada. It is very fast for a truck. Well... to my suprise, the new 4x F250 6.0 with a superchips tuner will give the F-150 a run for the money.

And c'mon... are you seriously worried about a $5,000 motor that has a 100,000 mile warranty on a 40-50k truck?!?! You seem ok with the gas prices and V10 mileage. BTW... have you seen people try to sell a used super duty with a v10... good luck with that!

It seems to me he didnt like the 6.0 probably because of the throttle response. From what I have read, the 6.0 will haul but they have alot of turbo lag which would definitely annoy some people. BDude is making a decision that he thinks is best for him and thats perfectly alright. I just don't think he should have came to the 6.0L forum and started bashing all of you guys about your decision because he personally does not like them.

I seldom get into 'arguments' here, but it sort of sounds like you are a Dodge 'guy', which is fine with me, but why are you on a Ford site?

Furthermore, to address your individual comments -

I'm happy with my truck, to be sure. But there isn't a 'perfect' 'fills every need' vehicle (at least not for me). If I could own 4-5 vehicles, I would, and then I would have one that was 'right for the job'. I drive my truck because I like it, use it often, and for the most part 'fills every need'. Could it get better mileage? Of course....but it is a truck after all. Is a Honda/Toyota/Hyundai easier to park? Absolutely. I could find any number of vehicles, of many brands, that were better suited to a particular 'need', but I own only my truck and my Harley. I'm good with that!

If you feel the need, you can 'light up the rear end', but you don't like the speed/power?? Confuses me...

Brand name means nothing. Certainly true, it's all about whatever experience you might have had with a given brand. Makes no difference if it's vehicles or TV's, washer/dryers, computers..... There are only a finite number of manufacturers, of anything. If Honda parts come from the same place as Ford parts, one can probably figure DODGE parts come from the same place as some other brand parts. If a person likes what they buy, most don't care who made the parts, although some (me included) would rather 'buy American', but it has become more difficult to do that lately.

Ford is a 'primary' stockholder in Cummins. So what? Ford is a corporation, in business to make money. I own stocks in companies that I don't do business with, only because I believe they are good investments.

Ford purchased this stock to 'boot Dodge'? You have information to support this claim?

Okay, I'm done. Enjoy your Dodge, or Honda, or Chevrolet, or whatever you buy. It's your money. You spend it as you see fit, let others do the same, without questioning their decision please.

My cousin works as an electrical engineer for Chrysler/dodge and he told me this. In order of preference for diesels. Ford, Dodge, GM. This is from an engineer standpoint. Ford for powercurve (because its a V8) and cab was his answer.

A good reason he didn't find a v-10 on the lot was because of fuel price. They probably was "sold out" being diesel fuel is 70 cents over gas right now in our area.

Just traded in my '99 F250 with the V10mpg for an '06 F250 6.0, Regrets? 99 was paid for. thats it, 6.0 out pulls and gets better mileage pulling my trailer than the V10 got empty, but truthfully I'm glad to see the V10 supporters/buyers out there, helps bring the trade in value up a little when the rest of us want to get off them... thank you for your support

diesel in my area is 49 cents higher and is still a much better deal when I get between 16-18 mpg's (7.3L PSD) compared to 9-11 for a V-10 ..Do the math I did, and the reason there were no V-10's on the lot is because most people dont want them, I looked at excursions 2 years ago and there were six there with V-10's very low miles that they were practicly giving away, and that was well before the lastest gas price hikes.. These were 40K dollar trucks with around 12K miles on them 1 yr old and they were asking 26K for them,
eddie bauer package..

BDUDE, Don't kid yourself thinking you can drive a V10 like a car and get 11-12 mpg. My 05 F250, V10, torqueshift, 4:10 gears, 4" lift and 35" toyo m/t's gets 8-9 all the time, drive heavy and watch it go to 6-7. 1/3 the mileage as your current truck and I'm sure you would not be so happy with the V10. It's a good reliable motor, thats why I ordered it, but to think it's going to perform like a sports car over the diesel is a joke. If the 6.4 TT looks good (reliable and performs well) for 07 I'll be all over one and I'll be glad to leave the V10 for someone else. The V10 is a great motor but also has it's short commings.
