Just wondering what the MPG did to caculate its numbers and how fast it starts doing it. I drove 40 miles today with 2 stops and it started at 9.x and ended at 11.x Does it reset at start up or.....
It will average the fuel economy over the last 1000 miles, or since the last time it was manually reset. It starts doing it as soon as the engine is started,
What year truck do you have?If you have the new style with the mpg in the dash you just hit the reset button when mpg is displayed. If you have the older overhead style you press both buttons at the same time.
On the 05' the Average Fuel Economy (AVE) may be reset using the button. This mpg is often referred to as the lie-o-meter as rarely are they accurate. Some of the posts are referring to the Distance to Empty (DTE) and that cannot be reset. According to my owners manual it actually uses the last 500 miles to determine an average. The manual has a warning that you should make sure to fuel on a level surface for this to work properly. I wish it used afuel flow guage like an airplane but I think it more likely interpolates based on the amount of fuel which is less accurate. BTW mine changes immediately when I press reset while driving and slowly starts to average out.
The unit will update quite quickly after a reset (both buttons at the same time on my truck) - meaning I get a reading in a second or less.
This gives you an idea of what the mileage was over that time interval of a second or less. Repeatedly pressing the button will give you a pretty good idea of what the mileage is at that moment in time for the conditions you are under.
Not as handy as my other vehicle's computer which shows both the instantaneous mileage and the average but still a good poor man's way to get the answer.
The overhead "lie-o-meter" is working on two basic inputs. One is the fuel strategy of the PCM/FICM (it gets this over the network) and the other is the distance travelled (odometer). It's a fair approximation. It can be off because the fuelign called for wasn't actually delivered. It can also be off because stock trucks run their odometers about 3% to 5% "short"
The DTE uses an estimate of the amount of fuel in the tank. By my observation, it uses a calculation of level over time and it might also use the grade sensor from the transmission. It will react immediately to filling the tank, but adding a small amount of fuel may take 20 minutes before it updates.
