9" to 8.8" drum brake swap?

I'm thinking about upgrading my '94 Ranger's rear axle from the stock 28 spline 8.8" 3.27 open to an early Bronco 9". I've done a swap like this in the past on my '91 Ranger, but I used a disc brake kit. This time around, my hope is to use my brand new brakes from the 8.8", including the backing plates. Has anyone ever done something like this?

Thanks,
Pete S.

I have never heard of this being done before. Find a 9in axle (aka one of your Galaxies). Now measure the distance between the bolts holding the backing plate on. Then do the same for your current 8.8. If the "bolt pattern" is the same, then the backing plates will physically bolt up the the 9in, how well they work with the brakes installed is up in the air). Some how or another, your will have to get the axles the correct length for the new brake drum width, granted everything bolts on. Sounds like a lot of work.
Why do you need the 9in? Just buy new brakes for the 9in if you really need it. That axle has been around since 1957, stock brake parts are relatively cheap. Then sell the 8.8 to someone to offset the cost. I'm sure there are several people around your area with the 7.5 axle in their Rangers that would be glad to get your 8.8.

Swapping an in Exploder 8.8 rear with discs would be easier and you won't have to deal with taking out the ABS light that will be shing at you....because the 9" rear has no provision for ABS.

For the Exploder, you'd have to deal with the shock mount perches, among a few other tweaks, but easier than a 9" that is overkill. Heck, the 8.8 is overkill in a Ranger.

That's some FYI, but do as you wish...

Thanks! Yes, the 8.8 is strong enough for now, but I've got some Detroit Lockers and a few ring & pinions for the 9's already. My Ranger has 32" BFG's and 3.27's.....not too great for towing my camper. The Exploder swap was considered, since it's mostly bolt in and rear discs are zesty. And 4.10's were optional. But, for the cheapest way for lower gears (since I already have lots o' stuff), I'm gonna go 9". I'll let you know how it goes!

Thanks,
Pete S.
