Fuel Line question for 86' Ranger 4x4

Hi there first post,

I've got a fuel line that's leaking, and needs to be replaced.

It seems like there are two lines. Both seem to run in the same direction along the frame. But one of them just ends while the other one runs back to the rear end.

The one that just ends is rustier than the other one.

Is it possible that someone replaced the line already and left the old one in there? Or is this other line some kind of vent line or maybe it was going somewhere and rusted off?

Is there a fuel return line somewhere?

Thanks for whatever advice you can offer.

Welcome to FTE!!!

I don't recall the path but it will have a return line. Were do these lines start in the engine compartment?

What motor do you have? Mine is the 2.9 and it has two lines one going to the motor and the return line. If it's fuel injected than it will have two lines, one coming and one going.

It's a 2.9 V6.

When I get home tonight I'll take a closer look at where each one is going.

What would happen if the return line was rusted off and therefore not making it back to the tank?

How much fuel actually comes back thru the return?

Thanks,

I would expect a lot since you get 100psi of fuel pressure when it gets clogged.

How much fuel is leaking? Really though if that line is leaking it needs to be replaced regardless of wether it is the main fuel line or the return.

DOOOHHHH!!!!!

My apologies,

Upon closer inspection, the lines that I was looking at (that gas appeared to be dripping from) were actually the break lines. One appears to be a replacement which is hooked up and the other is a rusty one which which is disconnected at both ends and must be the original. I guess the thing that threw me off was the fact that there were two of them.

As you can imagine, it turned out the gas leak was higher up and leaking down onto the line. Judging by feel alone, it seems that the leak is coming from the top of the tank where the fuel line and the return line go into the tank. There's a little valley in the top of the tank right there and I can feel it filling up with fuel when the trucks running.

I guess I'll have to drop the tank and check it out. I'll probably do it this weekend.

Sorry for the confusion. Next time I'll take a closer look at my problem before posting.

Thanks for all the help though.

I had the Fuel return line on my 87 Ford Ranger Rusted off/out at the last bend before it returned to the tank. Truck would run fine and all but and I didn't notice much of a drop in MPG. but when I parked in a garage Had a strong gas smell and that is what I traced it back to. Had to drop the tank and replace the fuel sending unit. Wasn't much of a pain but wasn't the greatest job in the world to due either. Betting that your Metal Fuel return line is rusted out.

good luck with yours, also mine the gas had eaten away the Plasic tank Connection for the wire harness so all I had left was the wires and the connectors on the end of the wires but no plastic plug holding it all together.

I marked the wiring order and just put the wire on the new Sending unit connector and then used to Silicon cauking to cover all the connections up and haven't had a problem with it since.

Though my Gas gauge is off now it is running on fumes at 1/4 tank, I just fill up at 1/2 tank and am good to go.

sublime out.

Think about pulling the bed rather than dropping the tank.

I agree with Ken pull the bed. Especially if you have duel tanks. Then you can check both while its off. Head off any future problems at the pass.

Yeah,

Someone else told me pulling the bed might be a little easier. I'll probably give it a shot this weekend. I'll post the results. Thanks for the help.

Well,

I pulled the bed off and checked it out.

The tank is rusted big time, so I'll go ahead and replace it. The ascending unit is the actual source of the leak so that'll need to go as well. The wiring harness was also decomposed so I'll need to rig something up with that.

The tank and unit will run me aboout $100 each.

Should I go ahead and replace the internal fuel pump while I'm at it?

Thanks for the help.

yes I would replace the internal fuel pump if you have things that far apart it is easy to due.
