Question Noisy rear end

Hi I have a noisy rear end

( mostly the truck)

I do not know the problem, and am learning on the way, I figure my truck breaks, I learn to fix it,

Problem child is a 76 f 150 4x4 purchased a year ago.
390 np 203 3.73 gears 33 inch bf goodrich rubbers

I have intermittant whining problem ( my truck has the problem)

When I speed up it gets faster, slows while slowing down, dosen't go away when I hit the brakes.

Condition of brakes unknown ( haven't hit anybody yet)
No warning lite on the dash

Crush berrings on ford 9 inch worn, some in and out play in wheel when truck jacked up.

Condition of rear end lube (that sounds wrong) unknown

In all seriousness please chime in with your .02, I really enjoy this truck and cant afford to have a shop do the work.

Thanks!!

John

well how much fluid is in the diff???????? that is the first starting point. the plug is on the third member(the pumpkin the thing where the driveshaft attaches) the plug is a 3/8'' on the side it uses a rachet head to open it. the fluid should be level with the bottom of the hole any les than 3/8'' means you have no wheel bearing lubrication and are ruining it fast.

So it is easy to check? If it is low do I just top it off with the approporite lube??

Ohhh and here is the "john is a idiot for omitting this" statement,

I used the truck to yank on a tree stump, mebbe about 30 secconds tottal, in 4 low, the dang tree was lifting up my rear end, so I figured I should stop.

If it was fluid would it be a constant whirl, or a "Knife sharpening" whirl??

thanks a lot, I hope to be able to share what I learn with people in the future.

JA

the sound could be either of those. but if damage has been done which is likely fluid will not help much but it would buy you some time..

I'd recommend a complete rear fluid drain and refill. If it still whines, you have mechanical problems either with a bearing or your backlash is thrown off between your ring and pinion gears. It will only get worse over time. Check out this post:

Well, Crawled under the truck, here's what I saw, please forgive my description,
1. Lubed rear u joint, and front input shaft, ( the thing that slides over the axel stub on the front half of the truck that expands for axel droop)
A. noticed some orbital play in joint.

2. ran out of lube, didnt hit front u joint, but it was lubed about 6 weeks ago by myself.

3. had truck in nuetral with parking brake off and on the ground, I was not able to wiggle drive shaft back and fourth, or side to side, however the above mentioned joint was fubared. (play at the end)

4. I was looking for a bolt to check the fluid, but instead I found a 4 sided hex head, that apeared to be located right above the pinion, is this the fluid inspection plug?

5, out of curiosity, the 3rd member apeared to be welded to the axel tubes, I thought it was removable, the bottom of the pumpkin apeared to be slightly shaved as well.

I have been thinking about the symptoms a little, I remember last week hearing a little squeek, and thinking I must have a wheel bearing going out, I have also had a little clunk while goosing the gas from a stand still.

Opinions??

Thanks!

JA
