I have a 78 stepside with a 79 351m 4 speed engine convers. The previous owner swapped the engine and somehow knocked out the clutch fork(the one that pushes in on the pressure plate) He went ahead and completed the swap and now I cant get the fork to slide back in its pivot area. I cant shove the fork up onto the input shaft far enough to slide the clip down into its pivot block (has the ball bearing type pivot) Is ther any way to get this fork back in its proper placement without separating the engine from the bellhouse?
No, I believe you do have to seperate the two. Though, only a few inches. You need to release the pressure on the fork to be able to swing it over it's pivot.
If you take your time, have a friend to help guide the tranny backwards on a floor jack, you should be able to put it back together without having to align the clutch again, you need about two inches between the block and the bell housing...
