My 91 Ranger w/3.0L V6 and 310,000KM's has all of a sudden developed a thirst for fuel. The fuel mileage has suddenly dropped yet there appears to
be no fuel smells or leaks that I can see.
I changed the spark plugs about three or four months ago. Someone has suggested that I try changing the rotor and dist cap, but I'm not sure that that is the problem.
Has anyone else experienced a sudden increase in fuel comsumption and is there anything that I should look for that might cause such a major drop in mileage?
did you change tire sizes? what kind of plugs? fuel-filter? catalylic converter clogged? any newer damage to the front end? hills and wind resitance seem to kill these trucks on gas mileage.
No change in tire sizes. The fuel filter was changed at the beginning of the summer and the plugs were replaced with Platinum plugs from the Ford dealer. The cat converter is working fine (I think-how would you test that ?) .
There is no damage on the front end. One thing that became loudly apparent is that the pipe between the rear of the cat converter and the front of the muffler broke loose of the hanger, leaving a nice 2" hole in the exhaust pipe as well as 1" hole just below the neck of the muffler (where the newly 'holed pipe' is connected).
I wonder if the lose of back pressure caused by the hole in the exhaust system is to blame.

well look at it this way. if you were trying to fart with a cork in your you know what nothing will come out but you'd probably be pushing really hard making your face red. when their is something restricting exhaust flow its the same thing but your face is still red because of the increase in gas consumption. by the way, how new is the brush guard and how is the performance overall.
The red truck pictured is not mine, it belongs to someone else. My truck is blue and no
brush guard on it. I just haven't figure out how to shrink a picture of my truck to a size that will work with this website ( all my pictures are too big in size ).
The performance is good, or at least as good as a 3.0 V6 with 310,000KM on it should be.
BTW- I am thinking about putting on dual straight pipes on her (after the cat converters of course!!!)
blinking alien is goooood! it seems that the truck is shall we say, broken in a bit. maybe its just gettin tired. but still, you always want better mpg. their are alot of things to consider when it comes to this. one thing you haven't stated is about how much has your mpg fell off?
I don't have exact numbers, but let's just say that a short trip a couple of weeks ago which should of taken less than 1/8 of a tank, took just over 1/4 tank.
The truck since then has been okay (not as bad) on several trips since, but it's not quite as good as it used to be.
One question though, with the holes in the pipe and muffler now, I am looking at putting on straight dual pipes (no muffler, but still keep the cat converter). How would this effect the mileage and does anyone have this setup now and how have you found it.
personally i would'nt do the no muffler thing, it'll be louder and with a v6 it won't sound very good. i would however have the entire exhaust system checked out from the exhaust manifold to the tailpipe. then maybe go with duals with a good high-flow muffler. but definately check the cat-converter. this may sound funny but aerodynamics of these trucks are not the greatest and i personally have lost a great deal of mpg because of a windy day or alot of steep inclines or hills. oh by the way, how did you get the blinking alien?
I got the blinking alien from a website (sorry I can't remember which one). I have decided not to go without the muffler. I will be going with a dual setup with one muffler with dual output. The kit is designed for my truck and engine, so it will be okay.
The gas mileage has returned to normal over the last week. I'm thinking maybe watered down or bad gas?
well i'm glad you didn't go without mufflers. yea that set-up sounds good, nice and mild. also glad to hear your gas mileage is coming back especially with the hurricanes down south the gas price is supposed to up again!
