What Year 9" Rear End fits a 47 Truck?

I am planning on swapping out the original rear end on my 47 truck with a newer 9" rear end. Is there a series of year that I should buy that is the best fit? I guess 3:25 or 3:50 gears would work. The truck has a 302 SB / C4 Tranny. This truck has had a full body off resto, and will look stock, minus parts of the drivetrain. Any help will be appreciated.

Welcome to the boards, Mike. The stock rear is about 60" wide, I have heard the late '50's 9 inch rears work, and the '70 Mustang will as well. The 9 inch in my '70 Mustang is just about the same width as my '46 1/2 ton. Check out this article here on FTE. The width of the '42-47 Ford truck is the same as the '48, so this information will apply as well.

67 thru 72 Ford 1/2 ton truck rear ends, (complete rear axle assy.), are a DIRECT bolt-in the 42 thru 47 and possibly later Ford trucks. Width is the same ---springs bolt up, even the stock shocks bolt up, I did change mine to the later styler--just bought re-po shock mounts and drillled the frame, the only thing needed to be changed, if you are running stock trans and driveshaft is to get a "big & little" universal for the driveshaft. This way you also retain the 5 1/2" bolt pattern for the wheels.
Been running this combo for years in my 46.

The 67-72 F series rear will give you the widest drum brakes available for better stopping power. Very nice set-up if you are not going to disc brakes. I bolted a '68 right to my stock spring mounts.

46achers - Sorry for the Newbie Q, but what is a
"big & little" universal for the driveshaft
? I've located a 72 rear assembly and now need to figure out how to plug it into the '47.
Thanks,
John

Two ends of the joint are bigger than the other two, allowing you to run a different driveshaft/rear end then what they were designed for.

Thanks UnderPSI!
So where do I find such a thing? Is it something I can get new? Where can I find out more?

Unchrome, sorry I didn't get back to you, anyhow as stated I had to use the big n little universal, (see PSI post), on my application. I bought mine at a local parts store and these should be quite common. A lot of racers in this area (PA.) use them, so...

It isn't necessarily something you want to look for - just that if you end up with that combo, there are u-joints to make it work.

9" rears: all 57-72 will swap. Some have 28 spline axles, some have 31. Some have square shoulder bearings, some use tapered roller bearings. As noted 67 on have larger brake shoes, but for normal use the early ones work just as well even for daily drivers.

gear ratio is a personal pref thing, but with a C4 1:1 final output I'd try to keep the ratio closer to 3.00 if you plan to drive it much. No higher than 3.25, and as low as 2.75 would work. I prefer to run 3.50's in std trans trucks.

Thanks Dave, Thanks mtflat:
I'll start by getting my hands on the '72 rearend so I can actually have something useful to ask about. I know a couple of local vintage auto enthusiasts who may be able to point me toward a source for the universal joint, too.

Your local NAPA or equivalent should have what you need. You can even measure across the yoke where the caps stop AND measure the diameter of the cap. Both yokes. Then take the measurements to town and they should be able to fix you up.

My mind is slipping, I used to know the part number for the UJ you're looking for, something like 1020...I'll take a gander through my notes and see if I can find it
