I'm contemplating putting power windows in my '55 and am a little intimidated when I look at the inside of my doors. Can someone tell me how difficult this project is?? Also, any recommendations as to where to buy the power window kits? Thanks much for any help...Bob.
There is a tech article at classictrucks.com titled "Window Shopping" that goes through the steps of installing power windows. Most of the article is written for the 56 but near the end they talk about what is involved in doing the 53-55 doors which seems a little more work. I recently converted my 56 to one piece power windows and it wasn't that tough. Good luck.
Because I not the most electronically inclined I was thinking of buying the same kit you did. Which switches did you buy? I was thinking of buying the one switch that will allow the stock cranks to bolt to it. Making it appear as if you still have manual windows. SO you are happy so far with the kit? Thanks
I used the switches with the kit. Unfortunately the switches you are referring to won't work because the new motor sits behind the crank hole. Yes I'm happy with the kit. The driver door window works perfectly, the passenger just "ok". I think it will require more adjusting/fiddling, although two friends with different electric set ups also have difficulties with pass window in their F100's. Go figure.
I spoke to a guy a while back who had switches that hooked up to your stock handles to keep the stock look, and still have the power windows. You can find him at www.widecontact.com He is a good guy for all the little custom electronics.
Broom - I couldn't find a listing for that switch at the website you included, but I know what you mean.
Tacson - "Autoloc" also has a power window switch that uses the stock window crank handle. Instead of cranking around, it works by moving the crank up or down 15 degrees. This may be exactly what Broom was talking about. Look in car mags (I found it in Rod and Custom). They usually have a 2-page spread of stuff. They also have universal power window kits and a load of different switches. I couldn't find a listing for the crank switch at their website. Call them at 1-800-873-4038 and ask about the "electric window crank switch".
