I don't know what u think but have used hp computers for years with no issues....at work and home but a lot of companys have changed to dell and I can tell u that's a BIG mistake since they break ALL of the time.
We never had these kind of problems with hp.
I know hp cost more but you get what u pay for.
Honestly, if you know someone that can build them, or take the time to learn how (its really not very hard at all) you'll end up with a much better product. It might cost a little more if you actually pay for all the software, and upgrade the parts from what they would've been, but I think you'll end up satisfied with something you did yourself and it will run much better.
As for Dell vs HP I've never had either, but we've had problems with our HP fax/copier/scanner. Other than that i've heard good things for both.
Technically, this should be in the general NON-automotive discussion...
I run an information technology business. I've seen 'em ALL come through here. As far as I can tell, they all suck. They are starting to get better, but still use cheap components. I would have to say, the only reason companies buy either is for warranty coverage, and to save $$$. I could build a far better computer, but it would cost more, and they have reservations about my warranty.
I bought a used Dell Lattitude laptop back in April and I havent had any problems with it yet.
The computer is 6 months old and I bought it for $650. So far Ive been very happy with it.
I used to have a Compaq Presario that was 7 years old and I never had any problems with that, untill it finally just wore-out.
I dont think one brand of computer is any better than any other, the guts of them are all pretty much made in the same place.
Octane
I've owned both an HP and a Dell, with no problems with either one of them. I ran the HP for about 3 years, then passed it on to my oldest son, it's still in use now. I've been using the Dell for the last 2 years. I prefer the Dell, but probably just because it's a lot faster than my old HP.
I have a Commodore computer that is 20 years old and has never broken down, I bet that is better then most PCs
Seriously, I build my own and have had very few failures being on 24x7. My current one is almost three years old.
I usually buy just HP printers, though not the low end models, because they hardly ever break down and when they do, they are usually the only ones you can find parts where the purchase price is not more then what the printer is worth.
I guess I should clarify, I work as a designer in the aircraft industry and it's the way dell handles the software vs hp.
Any computers we use we use to the max.....full bore. Dell can't take it....hp can.
Never noticed any hp printer problems ever. At work that is.
I like the Hp printers.
My mom and dad have a HP deskjet inkjet printer that is from about 1995, I have a brand new HP all in one (printer/scanner/copier) and I told mom if I could get the driver installed to run that deskjet on my dell laptop I would gladly trade.
Of course i also just bought them a brand new computer/printer/monitor the entire works for Mothers Day and Father's Day this year. My fiance works at Best Buy the cpu and all the accesories came from there as well, but the accesories all came at about half the cost.
My wife's lively hood is dependent on her notebook.........not enough band width to tell you how much she HATED Dell and their LACK of support (and lack of English speaking people)
She's worn out Sony's, Compaqs, Toshibas, HP's.........never too much bad to say (the Sony had some issues)
We are currently running IBM's (notebooks) so far they have been the most trouble free...........can't comment on customer support, never had to call them yet.

I'm suprized you arn't using computers custom built for your application. Just about everyone I know in graphics design, or some other heavily computing demanding field is using a custom built rig.
Seems like, I have had a better luck with HP printers than HP PCs. On my P4 HP, both the DVD drive and the CD writer, along with the mouse, went defunct. Our IT department mostly opts for Dell for robust servers and they are real diehards.
Overall, it appears that printing needs are served better by HP, and the PC needs by Dell...but, there can always be exceptions to this general trend.
Personally, I always have preferred to assemble my own custom built systems in the past. But, now I just pick'em off the shelf based on my needs!!
