Got an '05 F-150 4x4 and a 2wd model both with the 5.4 Has anyone relocated the oilfilter from its factory home on the left front of the engine to some other place slightly less conjested and easier to get to? Changed the oil 5 times between the 2 pickups and cuss that oil filter dang near every time. Would appreciate any info on this subject especially if anyone might know what kind of remote to use and where to put it if you did relocate it provided that relocation is even a possibility.
I know Amzoil makes a remote oil filter kit. Probably runs 200 - 300 bucks. I think it's a two filter system and of course it is supposed to be used with the Amzoil synthetic oil. They say you don't need to change oil then just filters. Sounds rather expensive...the filters aren't cheap and they need to be changed often. I once saw a vehicle that had that system. The guy said he had 25000 miles on the oil and it looked like it had just been changed. Just my thoughts for you. Good luck! I believe Amzoil has a website you could probably find the info on them there.
I have a '99 F250 LD with a factory remote oil filter, My 04 F150 scab had none but the factory engine mount. So I did a lot calling to dealers - em to Ford & all said put a remote oil filter on the 5.4 4x4 as the '99. I ordered the Rapid Cool remote oil filter system from Jeg's, [ $46.] I mounted the filter on the INside of the frame [ drivers side] right in front of the eng. location. I put the filter nearly Verticle to PREfill it before start up. the filter is now very easy to change & NO mess on the front drive axle anymore. I hope this helped? Tubo
Mikec35: Every dealer I called [ 3 ] & Ford Tech in Dearborn said NO problem, After all my 1999 F250 LD [ same as a F150] Has a Factory Remote oil filter. It's located behind the drivers side front bumper. I reasoned if the factory put a remote filter on a 5.4L 4x4, then what's the difference if I do. So I checked it out, found no dissenting mechanic, or service manager. That's what I done over 40k ago & not one problem to date. Tubo
I've read a few different post on the OIL change problems???? I'm a little confused, since I've never had a problem. Actually this is one of the easier vehicles to change. I just reach my hand in the front right on top of the plastic oil drip pan. Use a "Oil Band Wrench" and presto.
I JUST HATE HOW THE OIL ALWAYS DRIPS ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE DRIP PAN.
I've got oil coming from both sides at 8" of seperation. (drip pan was a good idea "IN THEORY")
Well I have a 4x4 & the oil filter sits in back of the front drive axle, Do you have a 4x4? The oily mess & hard to reach filter is my main complaint. Anyone that has changed it will know of what I speak. The remote oil filter will add another QT. to the system, be warned! I had to use a fil. wrench that goes on the filter end with a 12'' extension on the ratchet. I like the remote location because of NO MESS, & PRE fill the filter. Now my filter screws on near Verticle, & no mess when removing, There it is F150 owners, Tubo

I thought I might be losing my mind....... I have a 4x4 04 F150 screw. I just ran out to double check my location of the filter. Laughing I double checked the 5.4 logo and 4x4 on the side of the truck (LOL).
My filter is located in FRONT of the FRONT DRIVE AXLE, right on top or the steering control. I have LOTS of room, just behind the front bumper and I would say this is ALMOST the easiest oil change of my life! (almost..... I have a 77 f-700)
Could Ford have changed the location depending on built dates???? I'm running out now to take a pic and try to post to my gallery!
Your right Hardcase 72, the filter sits in front of the drive axle, but in back of the cross member. there, is where the plastic drip tray sits. You gotta keep an eye us old folks. But if you read my other posts you would agree that having the filter on the inside of the frame, 12'' in front of stock location is VERY easy to change AND I'll add a little wood to the fire, There will never be a drain back on a verticle filter, but there will be ''some'' on a horizontal filter. Tubo
Tubo, Your right! And I do agree that the F-150 isnt the BEST set up! And A remote would be a nice addition. Also an extra quart of oil I feel is a GOOD THING!
I just figured people might be getting the wrong impression on the stock filters. With the right tools and from the right angle (front) you can get at the filter without to much difficulty.
Also After every oil change I simple spray a small amount of "Engine Degreaser" Around filter and on plastic drip tray and HOSE off with water. Cleans up nice!
(ford focus) I have to jack it up to get access to filter.
Have a 98 F150 and a 05 f150. I never liked the idea of having the remote directly under the front bumper. Liked it even less when I was stuck on I 95 coming back from Fla when the factory installed unit leaked oil at 65k miles where the aluminum tube is crimped over the rubber lines. I was overjoyed when I discovered the 05 had it back on the engine block. I would rather buy a specail wrench than worry about another time bomb when it comes to making a simple eature too complicated. I just wished the fly by wire gas pedal was like the 98
