How's it going? I have a '97 Expedition 4x4 4.6. Everything's been working perfectly since the day that I got it. Now all of a sudden my AC isn't blowing cold air and this loud hissing noise is coming from the inside of my truck. I believe the two are related, but I don't know what the thing that is making the hissing sound is called. If you open the back of the truck, there is a panel on the left. Once you get it open, there's a few metal hoses in there and they are very very cold to the touch. If I figure out what this is I might be able to find out what's going on by searching around this site more before bringing it in to the dealer. Thanks.
Maybe a restriction somewhere in the system. I don't know all the components of a car AC like I do a home AC, but on a home system the cold compressed refrigerant is carried in a line to a piston/orifice at the evaporator (coil) where it is vaporized prior to entering the coil. On your system, it sounds like the cold refrigerant is not making it through to the coil for some reason.
Hey thanks for the help guys. I dropped by a shop and the guy said that the rear AC evaporator (I think it was the rear, unless there is only one for the whole AC system) was leaking freon. I might take it in this weekend. Before then, I'm gonna look around here and see if I'll be able to fix it, although I doubt it. Thanks again.
If it is leaking, GET IT FIXED, mine had a leak in the front evaporator, about a can every 3-4 days, since this was cheaper then fixing I just kept topping it off until I ended up in the hospital for cardiac arithmia, yes my heart stopped-While I was driving home from the grocery store.
This freon will KILL you, I am/ was in perfectly good healthy condition, and after a full line of tests ($48000 later) I am luckily back to normal or like my wife says back to the way I was before......
Check out the warning label(wish I did) or look into the MSDS sheets for R134
Holy crap man! That's some serious stuff. My truck is sitting in the driveway, I am taking it in this weekend. I'm driving one of my dad's trucks for the moment, and even if I did need to drive it, which is unbearable since it's 110-120 degrees here in Vegas, I'll keep the A/C off and the windows down...
