This must be the week for warning light issues. I just had the "Service Engine Soon" light issue resolved. Now the ABS light has come on. I have fiddled with the symptoms today for about 2.5 hours with the following results: (Keep inmind that the brakes and the fluid were changed at 46K miles).
1. Starting the vehicle, and watching all warning lights go through their respective "post" process yields the ABS light coming back on, immediately after it goes off for testing.
2. Stepping on the brake pedal while starting the vehicle yields no light coming back on after the "post" process, until I take my foot off the brake.
I am not a mechanic by trade, however, I have done all of the work on every Ford truck I have ever owned (8) except this '00 Ford Expedition. In the past, I have read that the rear diff speed sensor could be the issue, but I think that the exciter ring could also be the issue.
Any ideas before I spend more money on this Expedition?
All replies are greatly appreciated.
Troutmeister-
TM, Same trouble. I am going to try to replace the rear differential speed sensor. I've been told that is sometimes the ABS light culprit and it only costs about $15.00. If its anything other than that I don't want to know........................$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I replaced the rear diff speed sensor yesterday (at the recommendation of the dealer, however, it did not register as a code violation on their code reader) and that goofy light is STILL on. They want 105 bucks an hour to troubleshoot. My 100K warranty doesn't cover it if it won't appear on the code reader. I am looking into arbitration with Ford, because I have taken to 3 dealers. I have done no brake modofications other than normal brake replacement. The delaer tells me that the exciter ring is fine and the trouble could lie some where in the wiring. I can still step on the brake pedal at startup, and the light doesn't come on until I release the brake. Unfortunately, I have a very time consumng job that doesn't permit me to do the work myself since I am on call 24/7.
they had to replace:
ABS Module
Axle Speed Sensor
Hub
I'm really not sure if the ABS module was bad, my extended warranty company covered all but $50.. I would check your contract because I've never heard a warranty that required a code to pop up .. mine requires a broken component..
trout,
I know its a stupid question but did you reset your computer? If not disconnect the battery for a few minutes and see what happens.....Just a thought.
I did reset the computer via the battery. I pulled the posts off the battery for 15 minutes after changing the sensor. I appreciate everyone's ideas and comments. BTW, My 100K warranty was purchased from Ford.
Most common problem is an axle-speed sensor. My hub was broken, which leaked grease onto it and caused it to malfunction (or they were too lazy to clean it, regardless they replaced). If it pulls no codes they say it's the "brain" - ABS Module. Dealer said it was a $1200 part
This problem on my truck started about a year ago first it came on intermittently if I cycled the ignition switch it would go out. After a recent trip the light stays on all the time. When I first start the car the light comes on then goes off, if I move the car more than a few feet the light comes back on. What is interesting if I go in reverese the light does not com back on, until I go forward again. Is getting to the speed sensor a huge job?
