When driving one beautifull summers night a couple of weeks ago, my 1989 F250 5.8L 4x4 5 speed dual gas tank pickup suddenly just stalled. I checked the fuel gages and noted that each was a least 3/4's full. I checked for spark and that is good. I replaced the fuel filter because it was about a year old anyway. Upon advice I changed out the fuel relay because it was the original. then I got out my test light and this what I found. With the ignition key on I have voltage at 2 of the leads to the fuel relay. I have no voltage to either side of the enertia cut-off switch mounted by clutch pedal. I also do not have any voltage to the fuel selector switch on the dash. I pulled out the fuel pump on the chassis just before the fule filter. I applied 12 volts to it and the motor turned and some fuel was pumped out. I checked the connector to ther pump with the key on and there is no voltage there. I've been told that there is a "maxi-fuse" somewhere in the engine compartment, but I have not been able to locate it. I was looking for a power distribution box like the one in my 97 Explorer but the only thing I see is a bank of three relays, including the fuel relay, by the air filter housing. One more thing, I don't hear the in-tank fuel pumps prime when I turn the ignition key to to the on position. Is there another fuse beside the 10 amp auxiliary tank selector fuse in the fuse panel under the steering wheel? There is voltage at the 10 amp fuse. I'm new to the FTE group and I hope I posted this thread to the correct forum.
If it was more than three seconds between when you turned the key on and when you checked the voltage, then the computer had already switched off the relay. There is a procedure for hardwiring the pumps on, I'm not sure of it, but somebody on here should be able to tell you.
When I was checking out the voltage to the fuel relay the yellow wire came out of the connector. It is badly corroded and more then likely the source of my problem. I would like to check out all the wires and connections to the relay. How to you remove the wires from the relay connector without damaging the plastic connector or the electrical connectors to the wire?
I also found the fusible links by the solenoid. I cleaned off the dirt and grime with DLF and they look in remarkably good condition.
One other issue. When I was checking the fuel pump on the chassis, the bracket that the pump mounts on just came apart due to rust and corrosion. I went to my FORD dealer but the bracket is absolete and not available. Can you recommend another source for the bracket? Or another solution?
