Tranny rebuild?
When the head gasket on my Ranger went the shop wanted $1500, and I was able to get it done for about $500 doing the work myself.
A $1500 repair is hard to swallow when thats how much the truck cost to begin with.
On a unrelated note, I'm getting a metal scraping sound on right turns only, any ideas?
Thanks
I just had to make the same decision two weeks ago, but with an A4LD. I opted to have the shop rebuild it because I don't have the time, ambition, tools or location for a job that big anymore. Twenty or 30 years ago it would have been a different story. It set me back $1700 which was hard to swallow, but still it's worth it to me for the above mentioned reasons.
There's probably a kit available for your tranny - there was for mine. But a reman for $750 sounds like a good option if it's got a warranty with it. As far as what the repair will cost compared to the value of the truck, it just seems to be a fact of life with these old Rangers that any major repairs are going to cost at or above the truck's value. I guess it comes down to what you'd have to pay for a new vehicle, how much you'd lose selling an old Ranger with a bad tranny, how much longer you plan to drive it, how many other things there are wrong with it, etc. There is some value in the amount of use you'll get out of it too. I guess it comes down to what you can live with when it's all said and done.
Good luck.

for the metal scraping sound, sounds like wheel bearings to me. raise the front end and check the wheels for play both vertically and horizontally. be sure to check your rotors and pads for any abnormal wear too.
