Fuel Tank Restoration

Could someone tell me what product I can use to clean durt and settlement from the fuel tank of my 85 f-150, the truck had been sitting unused for about 3 or 4 years before I got it. Someone told me to use carb cleaner, it sounded ok when he said it, more so because he ran a local repair shop, but now that I had a chance to think about it, I'm not so sure. What do you guys think.

I'm sure there are products on the market to remove varnish and gum from a tank that's been sitting for a while but for dirt and debris it would be best to remove the tank and clean it that way IMO. Dirt is dirt, you can't dissolve it.

I used engine cleaner to clean my tanks that had been sitting for quite some time. I Flushed, swirled and mopped the inside with a clean rag. After reinstalling them I ran some stuff to clean out gum deposits in the fuel system for a while. I also used an inline fuel filter to catch any loose stuff before it went to the carb. Everything is looking clean now.

I once cleaned out a gas tank with a high pressure washer/steam cleaner. If you have access to one I'd recommend it. Some coin opperated car washes have a bay for cleaning engines. Be sure to remove the pick up and float before doing so as to not dammage it. Radiator shops can also boil out a tank for you. Give them a call. Hope this helps.
