Start up rattle

Has anyone else had a rattle or clatter from their (2003) 4.0 when it is first started after sitting for a day or two?

It's most likely the lifters tapping. Try running a lower viscosity oil like 5w30 or 5w20.

Thanks jimw411. A friend of mine is doing what you suggest, but I was a little hesitant. I guess I needed a second opinion.
The owners manual calls for 5W-30 in a 4.0, next time I will try 5W-20 and see what it does.

i'm surprised it calls for the 5w30, i thought all the 03's and newer took 5w20, my cousin has a 03 f-150 with a 5.4 and it even calls for the 5w20. You may want to make sure it's full of oil too. The chatter is sometimes related to being low on oil. You truck probably takes around 5 quarts for an oil change. Let me know what happens.

I was suprised too! Even my 2001 Windstars 3.8 calls for 5W-20, but according to the owners manual (and I'm going to double check when I get home) the 4.0 is the only one that calls for 5W-30. The others (3.0 and whatever the 4 cylinder is) call for 5W-20.
Anyway, as soon as I get the chance I'm going to change the oil and see what kind of difference it makes. I don't think it's going to hurt the motor anytime soon but it still bothers me.

I'm wondering if the 4.0 still had the timing chain tensioner noise problem in 2003.

I checked my older manual (2002) and they have the 4.0 using 5w30.

How many miles on it? Rod bearings can also rattle on a start up. For the most part, Lifters clatter or snap with a higher pitched sound. Rod bearings rattle or knock with a lower pitched sound. Both only last a second or two, while your oil pressure builds (longer when it is below zero outside)

Just bought the truck a little over a month ago. It has 19K on it. It's fairly warm (80's to 90's) here. It doesn't rattle everytime I start it. Just from time to time, especially if it sits for a day or two.

I wonder if it's a oil filter problem???? Are you using the specified Motorcraft filter????

My Ford dealer did the first oil change for me and I'm almost sure they used a motorcraft filter, but I'm going to double check tonight when I get home.

Bearings should not wear enough at 19K to hear them. My vote is that you have a valve train problem, most likely the lifters and that your next move would be to do what the others have suggested and try a different viscosity. I have a 2004 Explorer 4.0 that makes a lot of valve train noise upon start up if I dont fill the oil filter first. Good luck.

Gibber, did this problem just begin after the Dealer last changed your oil????

My 2004 Explorer does the same thing at start up after it's been sitting overnight. It's been like that since just after the warranty ran out. I've tried different oil filters(Fram, Motorcraft, SuperTech, Purolator) all do the same thing. It's definitely lubrication related. If I remove the starter relay, crank the engine by jumping the contacts without having the ignition on for a few seconds, letting oil press. build up, and then reinstall the relay and start the engine normally. There is no noise. I think the oil is draining back out of the heads after the engine has been shut down over a certain period of time. The only fix I can think of is to install a preoiler to build oil pressure before the engine is cranked.
