The only way we could remove the wood floor, in the ‘56 Panel, was to drill the heads off the aluminum bolts. Does anyone know why they used aluminum? I think these bolts are the only aluminum in the whole truck.
We are looking for replacements and would like to find some with the square drive. Any suggestions?
I'd be really, really surprised if the aluminum bolts were original to the truck - but I've been wrong quite a few times before.
At any rate, McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) has a whole lot of different kinds of bolts. Unfortunately, I didn't see any square drive - only different variations on hex drive. Might still be worth a look if you're willing to use hex-drive. Use SHCS as your search term and their web site will walk you through a huge selection of bolts including good illustrations of each kind.
Check the usual vendors to see if they have the square drive you're looking for. Ping our stainless steel fastener expert, fatfenders, and see if he knows where you might find them.
Right, they aren't aluminum; used the old magnet test.
Whatever they are, they are much softer metal that the rest of the bolts. The heads drilled off just like aluminum and the bolts are very light for their size. I'll probably just look for stainless replacments, doubt if I could ever find that square drive ........
Don't give up yet. As George stated, try McMaster-Carr. They typically have most everything. The really neat theing about them is that they have no minimum order.
Did ya Know those "square heads" were invented by a Canadian? A Montreealer actually. But they never made it big down in the big smoke because he got patent I believe and held out for royalities and the automotive industry took a pass... that's why the automotive standard was Phillips head and why we cuss 'n skin our knuckles so much!
Robertson's come in 4 or 5 sizes I believe, # 1,2,3,4.
