Towing in Overdrive? YES OR NO

I have a 1996 f250 460 with 4:11 gears. Do i tow with overdrive on or off? I think trans is 4eod . THE MANUEL SAYS TO TOW IN OVERDRIVE UNLESS MORE POWER IS NEEDED! I ? this. I pull a 27 foot 5th wheel and sometimes my 16 foot boat behind the 5th wheel. Thanks in advance.

I just had a C-6 rebuilt a few months back in an older F250 (176,000 miles), I told the transmission shop I was in the market for a newer tow rig and they told me to stay away from Fords overdrive automatics. They said the BIGGEST mistake people make is towing in Overdrive. Also I have noticed over the past few months that the trouble and questions posted on this site seem to include numerous problems with the overdrive automatics, whether it be shifting problems, failure, etc. Just my opinion...Deen.

I had occasion to have problems with my 90 ford pickup while carrying a camper. The dealer said I may have caused the problem by running in overdrive... they rebuilt the trans under warrantee...luckily.

I wouldnt specially if your pulling 2 trailers. If you were pulling a little 8-ft trailer with a rider on it, it would be okay. Never use od when pulling that much. Also i wouldnt advise using Cruise either.
