Roar/Grinding Sound when Starting (2004)
2004 XLT/4.6L: I am getting a strange sound at cold start-up (not all the time) that sounds like something between a roar or grind (hard to explain). Almost sounds like the AC compressor but I can not tell as once the truck is started and stopped, I can not get it to repeat. Before I head back to the dealer, was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue (and had it fixed). Thanks in advance for any replies.

I'm pretty sure it's the AC compressor. My '03 with the 5.4 has done it since new, as has my mother's '04 Navigator (5.4), and my good friend's '04 Expedition (4.6). All three of ours do it under the same conditions; with the AC turned off, the noise doesn't occur when you crank, indicating that it's the compressor. Also, a local service manager says it's the compressor too. Hope this helps. By the way, it's not a problem, it just sounds bad. Like I said, mine has done it since I drove it off the lot brand new and my air conditioner has worked beautifully, always ice cold, even in this South Georgia heat and humidity.
