when i first start up my 150 when it's cold it idles way to fast. if i tap on the gas the idle goes down to normal but if i just put the thing in drive i'm doin about 20mph without touching the gas! its an 84 and carbed. is this normal or is there anyway to fis this?
if you already adjusted the fast idle cam, you may have to clean it up...those things get rusty and crappy. i sprayed it with WD-40 and worked it back and forth a bit, and it seems to work fine now. just make sure you adjust it when the engine is cold and the choke is closed.
thanx guys i will give those things a try. as soon as I get a chance to try them i will reply back with the results, but i have work and school for the next few days in a row so it'll be a few days. ps. full time school and full time work suck.
If you start the truck on a 40 degree morning how many seconds does it rev at a higher rate before settling to idle, about 700-750 RPM's? The truck is supposed to do that for about 15 seconds, or at least my 92 injected 6 does it. It may be the fan clutch going thru its paces, don't do anything just yet. If the truck is idling fast for up to one minute, let it. It won't hurt the engine if you let a few ounces of oil get up into the head before you stomp on the gas. My 91 injected V6 Probe revs for a long time also, maybe one minute, then slowly ramps down from 1200 RPM's to 700RPM's, it is running normal.
thanx, i wasn't sure if it was normal or not and luckly i haven't had time to do anything to the thing yet. now all I have to do is take care of the fan so it doesn't make that horrible squealing noise when i turn the car on.

That would be the fan belt slipping on the pully. Put on a new belt, tension it, and maybe put in a new pulley if necessary. (Unlikely)
yeah I had a feeling that the problem was somthing like a slippling fan belt. i know this isn't the right forum but while im on the subject when i turn my fan on in the car it is extreamly loud will tightening the belt fix that also?
I am not sure what an 84 carbed engine does at turn-on, but if the fan set-up is the same, or close to a 90's EFI, then the fan kinda makes a roaring noise. The squealing isn't good. Changing the belt is a good start, however the tensioner pulley will be an unknown factor, and the last thing you want to replace cause it is expensive. You may want to apply a mild degreaser to the pulleys and wipe them off before installing a new belt. BTW, if the engine is oily and it is leaking oil from the front seal, gaskets or power steering and getting on the belts, that dramatically lowers the life of a belt, and reduces performance of the belt.
thanx, i tried tightning the belt but it really didn't do anything so i got some belt dressing as a qick fix. im planning on changing the belt this saturday if i get sometime between work and my little brothers state championship.
